About
Aussie quintet providing a muscular update on jangly 80s indie pop.
Although Melbourne's Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever officially formed in 2013, the founding trio of singer/guitarists Fran Keaney, Tom Russo and Joe White had been playing in bands together since high school. With the addition of Joe Russo (Tom's brother) on bass and Marcel Tussie on drums, the band became official and set about gigging and working on their debut EP, 2016’s sprightlyTalk Tight.
The seven-track EP of "soft punk/tough pop" caught the attention of the global music press. The band was hailed for its unique three-pronged guitar and vocals attack and uncanny knack for infectious melodies that called to mind the likes of The Go-Betweens and The Feelies. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever signed to revered US label Sub Pop and issued their follow-up EP The French Press in 2017.
The band's debut album, Hope Downs, followed in 2018. The album maintained the high standards set by the band's two EPs and once again the reviews were hugely positive, with Rough Trade, Paste, Magnet and NME including it in their albums of the year.
Rolling Blackouts' second full-length album, Sideways To New Italy, came out in June 2020, reinforcing the quintet's unparalleled talent for crafting guitar-driven earworms with Cameo, Cars In Space and Falling Thunder.
In support of the album, the Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever announced UK tour dates for March 2021. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the tour was postponed to June 2022.
Sideways To New Italy is available for purchase here.
FAQS
Initially the band was known as just Rolling Blackouts. Following the popularity of Talk Tight, there was confusion because other groups were also called Rolling Blackouts. So the name, which had originally stemmed from one of their first songs, was expanded to include “Coastal Fever”, a reference to band member Tom Russo’s having once been holed up in a Cambodian hostel with an unknown virus.
The band plays a characteristically Australian style of indie guitar pop, drawing on 1980s-style jangle pop and the Dunedin sound, pioneered by New Zealand bands such as The Clean and The Bats and the Flying Nun record label.
The area referred to in the title of their 2020 album Sideways To New Italy is located near New South Wales’ Northern Rivers. Drummer Marcel Tussie comes from this small village of less than 200 residents that was founded by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s.
Rolling Blackouts C.F. are heading across the UK in 2022 as part of their rescheduled Sideways To New Italy tour. Tickets from the original dates remain valid.
