The Aussie five-piece tour the UK in spring 2021

Formed in 2013, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever hail from Melbourne, Australia. Originally, they started as a trio of singer-guitarists – Fran Keaney, Tom Russo and Joe White – but now are a quintet with the addition of Joe Russo on bass and Marcel Tussie on drums.

Also called Rolling Blackouts C.F., the band’s first release was 2016’s fun-spirited EP Talk Tight, a seven-track collection that won them praise at home and abroad.

In 2018, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever unveiled their debut album, Hope Downs. A wonderful mix of guitar-pop tunes and classic ballads, it showcases their unique songwriting style. Often described as cinematic, they evoke landscapes and memories with characters and stories highlighted through their vocals and swirling guitars.

Rolling Blackouts C.F.’s second full-length album, Sideways To New Italy, came out in June 2020. With it the band’s gaze has shifted inward to capture their individual histories as well as the places that shaped them.

In support of this release, the Aussie group announced they are heading to the UK to play a series of dates in March 2021 that kicks off at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire and then stops in seven more cities across the country before wrapping up at Sheffield University.

Sideways To New Italy is available for purchase here.

Initially the band was known as just Rolling Blackouts. Following the popularity of Talk Tight, there was confusion because other groups were also called Rolling Blackouts. So the name, which had originally stemmed from one of their first songs, was expanded to include “Coastal Fever”, a reference to band member Tom Russo’s having once been holed up in a Cambodian hostel with an unknown virus.

The band plays a characteristically Australian style of indie guitar pop, drawing on 1980s-style "jjangle pop" and a "Dunedin sound".

As of 2020, the band has two EPs (Talk Tight and The French Press) and two albums (Hope Downs and Sideways To New Italy) to its name so far.

Among Rolling Blackouts C.F.'s most popular tracks are 2017's The French Press, 2018's Talking Straight and now 2020's Cars In Space, Falling Thunder and Cameo.

The area referred to in the title of their 2020 album Sideways To New Italy is located near New South Wales’ Northern Rivers. Drummer Marcel Tussie comes from this small village of less than 200 residents that was founded by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s.

Rolling Blackouts C.F. are heading across the UK in March 2021 as part of their Sideways To New Italy tour.

The 2021 UK tour kicks off in London and then heads to Birmingham, Oxford, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and Cardiff, before wrapping up in Cardiff.

Pip Blom will provide support for all the UK shows.
