About

Pioneering art rock performer and one of the founding members of Pink Floyd

It was 1963 when Waters began playing rhythm guitar for Sigma 6. Later that year, after a line-up change, he became the band’s bassist, a position he would hold for some time. It would be three years until Sigma 6 assumed the name Pink Floyd, and even longer until Waters stepped up as frontman.

From 1968, following the departure of previous frontman Syd Barrett, Waters took the helm, becoming Pink Floyd’s main songwriter and vocalist. He was the sole lyricist on The Dark Side Of The Moon, considered one of the most successful rock albums of all time both commercially and artistically. He was also the main writer on the band’s next four albums, released between 1975 and 1983. His last album with the band, The Final Cut, was again written entirely by Waters.

Waters’ first solo album, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, was released just a year after his departure from Pink Floyd, with its follow up, Radio K.A.O.S, arriving in 1987. In 1989, at the fall of the Berlin Wall, Waters staged one of rock’s defining live moments: The Wall – Live In Berlin. The concert was seen by approximately one billion viewers on TV and featured artists such as Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams, Sinéad O’Connor and Cyndi Lauper. The double album of the performance that followed was certified platinum.

Waters’ third solo record, Amused To Death, was released in 1992 to critical acclaim. Following Amused To Death, Waters took a seven year hiatus from the music industry. He returned in 1999 with the In The Flesh tour, which took him across the globe and continued until 2002. In 2005, he reunited with Pink Floyd for the Live 8 concert at Hyde Park, marking their final performance together. That same year saw him release Ça Ira, a three-act opera on the French Revolution. The following year, Waters set out on his elaborate Dark Side Of The Moon tour, in which the second half of the show saw him perform The Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety.

In 2017, Waters returned to release his first solo album in nearly 17 years, Is This The Life We Really Want?, produced by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. The album is simpler in execution and less theatrical than many of Waters’ previous solo releases, with a greater focus placed on his lyricism. In 2022, Waters embarked on his This Is Not A Drill tour, in which he took a setlist made up of both Pink Floyd songs and his solo material around North America and Europe.
