Former Verve frontman and celebrated solo artist
With an ear for achingly beautiful melodies, multi award-winning artist Richard Ashcroft is also regarded as one of this era’s best lyricists thanks to Bitter Sweet Symphony, Sonnet, Lucky Man, The Drugs Don’t Work, This Is Music and many more. He wrote these songs and others during his time with The Verve.
Born in Lancashire, Ashcroft rose to fame with the Wigan-based alt-rock/Britpop band, from their formation in 1990 through to their second split in 1999. The Verve released one of the seminal albums of the ’90s – 1997’s Urban Hymns – that went on to sell over 10 million copies, win Best British Album at the BRIT Awards and be short-listed for a Mercury Prize. It also led to Ashcroft receiving his first Ivor Novello award in 1998 for Songwriter of the Year.
With The Verve broken up, Ashcroft launched the solo chapter of his hugely successful music career in 2000 by releasing his debut album Alone With Everybody. Not only did it top the UK albums chart, but it spawned several hit singles including A Song For The Lovers, Money To Burn and C’mon People (We’re Making It Now).
Two more critically acclaimed albums followed: 2002’s Human Conditions and 2006’s Keys To The World. These landed at No.3 and No.2 on the albums chart, respectively.
In 2007, Ashcroft reunited with The Verve and they released Forth, their second No.1-charting album, in 2008 before breaking up yet again in 2009.
Ashcroft started a new project, RPA & The United Nations Of Sound, in 2010. The band released the album United Nations Of Sound in 2011, with its lead single Are You Ready? used in the closing credits of the sci-fi thriller The Adjustment Bureau. Ashcroft also wrote and performed another track, Future’s Bright, for the film’s opening music.
After a six-year absence, Ashcroft returned in 2016 with his fourth solo album These People, featuring songs like Out Of My Body, Hold On and They Don’t Own Me.
In 2018, Ashcroft revealed his fifth solo album Natural Rebel and supported it with a run of shows across the UK. The following year he was awarded his second Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.
In late 2020, Ashcroft announced a pair of acoustic evenings celebrating his repertoire of solo and Verve compositions at the London Palladium that were rescheduled to October 2021. In June 2021, he added two more shows to his autumn tour in Liverpool and London.

Richard Ashcroft is a absolute God! Never fails to disappoint. Would love for there to do a meet and greet. The royal albert hall was an amazing venue!
I've seen Richard Ashcroft play a few times, this is the best he's ever been. The Royal Albert Hall was amazing.
First time at the Hall and what a venue great atmosphere. Richard Ashcroft is a must see for any discerning music buff...brilliant.
Best gig I have experienced!! I've seen many artists over the years but this gig was a real privilege...despite the heavy rain! Ashcroft shared the quip with us fellow Wiganers..Dont worry its only Billinge rain..Absolutely fantastic. Still buzzing from memories of it
Such a good night!……Richard Ashcroft was amazing as always….would thoroughly recommend getting tickets to see him……piece hall is a beautiful venue,it wasn't cramped and the atmosphere was electric…..even though the wine was £30 a bottle, but you would expect to pay extra at an event
Great day, nice venue and ticketmaster kept me updated all the way up too the day, fantastic experience all round,I'll definitely be back soon 👍👍
I am a huge Richard Ashcroft fan and hadn't been to The Piece Hall in Halifax prior to this event. The Piece Hall is one of the best outdoor venues I have experienced and RA didn't disappoint. Great set as expected.
Had an amazing night seeing Richard Ashcroft, Ocean Colour Scene and Tom Meighan at Audley Edge House, what a voice and great musicians👏👏👏
Excellent acts all day blinding , not enough bars or toilets same problem as last year at Noel Gallagher gig , also no over night camping area 😌
Top class venue and mr Ashcroft just class and amazing 🤩 still have goose bumps now !! All acts were absolutely class but mr Ashcroft is just pure and simply a LEGEND , only down side was leaving the venue !!
This is a lovely venue well set out. Bands came on when advertised really entertaining well worth the visit for the view and set up. What let it down was no shuttles from the station and long queues for bars
We've seen a few now at the magnificent Piece Hall but this topped them all. A great show from RA. Didn't want it to end.
Outstanding Richard was back on track at a cracking venue.
Wonderful performance of all his hits and everyone's favourite songs. What a talent this man is and I'd like to thank him for enhancing my life with his music. Plus he is, a really lovely person. His and his band's delivery of his songs, couldn't be better. The bright lights and strobe were a bit uncomfortable at times, but worth it to see this concert. An unforgettable evening that surpassed my already high expectations.
Amazing venue that Piece Hall is, made even better with one of the best live performances I've seen at the venue since it started showing live acts.
Richard Ashcroft is a absolute legend His band are superb - great vibes in a great venue. Definitely will be back to the Piece Hall Shame that OCS didn't support ?
Wot a bloody cracking night went with a pal that haven't seen for a while both enjoyed it and as for Apollo junction they never fail every time and Richard Ashcroft wow words can't describe after seeing him at tramlines in23 I thought he's can't top or beat that and he absolutely did just that 🏴🏴🏴🏴
Richard Ashcroft live was effortless and the whole event was amazing. The English summer weather held out for us which made the outdoor venue of Dalby Forest a delight and had a festival-feel about it. Despite having thousands of people at the event, it wasn't overcrowded like many live events. Most commonly your favourite artists tend not to fully live up to your high expectations but this time Richard Ashcroft excelled. I would see Richard Ashcroft again in a heartbeat and I'll also keep an eye out for other summer events at Dalby Forest (though I am a bit picky about who I like enough to go and see live).
Wow what a night the rain came but you know it didn't spoil it . Loved every minute of the gig and being the homecoming to Wigan wow loved everything will be and hopefully there's more well organised thanks for the entertainment R A .
Richard excelled as usual, he gave a fantastic performance singing a range of songs. Loved the way he came onto the stage. Great visuals & lighting. Sound was perfect, band on point. Great venue too & luckily it didn't rain. Richard was in his hometown & told a few tales of growing up in Wigan. In particular a story about his teacher who prevented him from studying music & art!! Hilarious & a note of encouragement for all budding artists. Great rapport with the audience, as always. A genius!
