About

Rhod Gilbert & The Giant Grapefruit

When life gives Rhod lemons…

In his last show ‘The Book of John’, Rhod was dealing with some pretty pungent life citrus, and an idiot called John. Little did he know that things were about to turn even more sour… But Rhod’s not bitter; he’s bouncing back and feeling remarkably zesty. Hilariously dark, passionate and way too personal, this is classic Gilbert, squeezing every last drop out of life’s latest curveballs...with a little help from an old adversary.

  • Brilliant

Absolutely brilliant. Balanced the horrors of the 'C' word with humour perfectly. Truly inspirational story thank you Rhod for sharing it.

  • Laughter is the best medicine

by Kate H on 20/10/2024Sheffield City Hall Oval Hall - SheffieldRating: 5 out of 5

Rhod Gilbert never disappoints, sometimes the humour is a bit dark (the subject of his show is recent cancer diagnosis and treatment) but he is always funny. In this show he talks frankly about his experiences - sad, gross, undignified, frightening, and emotional - but it is not at all depressing! Rhod brings his own uniquely dark and exasperated perspective to everything. You will laugh, you may have a little cry, but you'll definitely leave feeling uplifted.

  • Cracking show, glad he's here to do what he does.

For a show entirely based on one's experience with cancer, it was very amusing and equally touching. I've seen Rhod a few times now and he never disappoints this was a different show to the ones of his I've seen before but no less enjoyable at amusing.

  • The show was amazing and so funny

by Tezza144 on 20/10/2024Sheffield City Hall Oval Hall - SheffieldRating: 5 out of 5

Rhod was brilliant, funny and sad at the same time. His take on his recent cancer and the treatment was unique and down to earth at the same time. We went with our family and we all had a great time.

  • Superb performance

No spoilers… Rhod narrates the tale of his experiences over the last few years. With a surprising and exciting mix of pathos and his usual funny rants he takes us on that journey with him. Lots of laughter from the audience throughout the night. I don't want to stray into the story (I nearly did Google what it was all about) as it's a great surprise if you don't know what it is about. The only thing I will say is I'm going to very wary of all the spoons going forward.

  • Fabulous Evening

    by PaulF on 13/10/2024King George's Hall - BlackburnRating: 5 out of 5

Great to see Rhod back on stage again in Blackburn. This show relating his battle with cancer covers all the emotional range. In parts hilarious, sad, deeply affecting, but most of all shows the power of the human spirit over adversity. A totally honest show, with Rhod not holding back on the difficulties encountered, both mental an physical when dealing with the diagnosis and treatment for cancer. A full auditorium was totally engaged and engrossed, with a deserved standing ovation at the end.

  • Fantastic show, laughter and tears

What a fantastic show. Rhod talks about his experience of cancer whilst putting a humorous twist on a serious condition. Making it acceptable to laugh and cry at the same time.

  • Hmmmn … not quite what I was expecting

    by tsj23 on 05/10/2024Lighthouse - PooleRating: 2 out of 5

I have wanted to see Rhod for many years. And obviously I was aware of his recent battles and thrilled at his recovery from such a devastating and debilitating illness. What I wasn't expecting however was what could only be described as a humorous therapy session - particularly as I am currently struggling to come to terms with my daughter's recent diagnosis. Possibly a little too close to home for me just at this juncture.

This show is a brilliant piece of work by a remarkable man. To take such a dark experience and make it into such a funny, emotional and entertaining show is truly amazing. I hope life goes back to giving him lemons rather than grapefruit xx

If you know anybody with a life threatening disease, this will lift your spirits and put a light hearted different angle on it. I didn't know what the show was about before going, and hadn't seen Rhod live before, but really glad we did. Simply brilliant, if you are lucky enough to go, make sure you do, it's brilliant!
