True crime podcast hosted by Hannah Maguire and Suruthi Bala
RedHanded began when Hannah Maguire and Suruthi Bala met at a Thanksgiving party that Maguire was forced into throwing. Beleaguered by her American flatmate’s extended family, Maguire found an instant kindred spirit in Bala, and the two quickly bonded over a mutual love of true crime podcasts.
From there, the two began swapping theories about the unsolved murder of child beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey. The next logical conclusion was to start their own podcast. And so RedHanded was born, the two hosts’ friendship growing in parallel to their project’s success.
What sets the podcast, which clocked up its 200th episode in May 2021, apart from similarly minded peers is its progressive attitude towards true crime. As Maguire and Bala explore horrific murders, unsettling hauntings and bizarre mysteries, they do so through a prism that feels very contemporary and considered, aided by the RedHanded’s rare position of having two female hosts in a male-dominated field.
Over the course of their 200-plus episodes, amateur sleuths Maguire and Bala have directed their honest, frank analysis towards cases that are both infamous (Jimmy Saville, Jamal Khashoggi, Anders Brevik) and relatively unknown, as well as some (such as their BLM series) that are tragically topical.
In June 2021, the duo announced a RedHanded live tour beginning in Manchester on 24 October 2021 and winding up in Glasgow on Halloween night.
