About

English singer-songwriter and two time winner of the Mercury Music Prize

The only artist so far to win the Mercury Music Prize twice, PJ Harvey is one of England’s most celebrated singer-songwriters. She began her career in her teen years, playing guitar with folk duo the Polekats and beginning to craft songs. In 1988, Harvey joined Automatic Dlamini, playing saxophone and guitar and providing backing vocals. She worked and toured with the group until the beginning of 1991, when she left with bandmates Rob Ellis and Ian Oliver to form a new group. The three of them became the PJ Harvey trio.

The group’s debut single, ‘Dress’, was released in October 1991 to huge critical acclaim. Their debut album, Dry, followed in March 1992, also to an overwhelmingly positive response, with PJ Harvey named Songwriter Of The Year and Best New Female Singer by Rolling Stone. The group were immediately back in the studio to write and record their follow up, Rid Of Me, released in May 1993. Shortly after a 1993 tour supporting U2, the group officially disbanded, and Harvey embarked on a solo career.

Harvey’s third studio album and her first solo project, To Bring You My Love, was released in 1995. Its lead single, ‘Down By The Water’, was a radio hit and hailed as Harvey’s mainstream breakthrough. Following the success of To Bring You My Love, Harvey embarked on her most experimental project yet: an collaborative album with former Automatic Dlamini bandmate John Parish entitled Dance Hall At Louise Point. Sessions for Dance Hall bled into the writing of Is This Desire?, Harvey’s fourth studio album, which won her a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.

In late 2000, Harvey released her fifth studio album, Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, which celebrated her love for New York City. It saw her nominated for a BRIT and two Grammys, and also won Harvey her first Mercury Prize. Her sixth studio album, Uh Huh Her, was written, recorded and produced over a two year period entirely by Harvey herself, with the singer-songwriter playing every instrument on the record as well – with the exception of some drums from Ellis. Her seventh album, White Chalk followed in 2007.

In March 2009, Harvey released her second collaborative album with John Parish, A Man A Woman Walked By. Just under two years later, her eight studio album arrived. Let England Shake was a brazen look at British history and its modern legacy of conflict and war. It earned Harvey her second Mercury Prize – and a Guinness World Record for being the only artist to have achieved this twice.

Fans would have to wait five years for Harvey’s ninth record, The Hope Six Demolition Project, which she began recording in front of a live audience in a custom studio in Somerset House. The album reached #1 on the UK Albums Chart and was nominated for a Grammy. Another long wait of six years followed for Harvey’s tenth studio album. I Inside The Old Year Dying was released in July 2023. Later that year, Harvey announced a special performance at Gunnersbury Park in August 2024, which would mark her biggest live show to date.

  • An amazing voice

by Est on 22/08/2024The Piece Hall - HalifaxRating: 5 out of 5

Piece Hall is always an amazing venue, even when it rains. A double rainbow appearing over the stage made a fabulous view. PJ Harvey was out of this world, her voice is still amazing after all these years. The sound quality was excellent.

  • Wowed by P J Harvey

From the moment i stepped into the wonderful Piece Hall venue in Halfax I knew it was going to be a special concert and it certainly was. I was wowed and mesmerised by P J Harvey and her band and it was such a conducive and fitting venue for her to perform in. I waited a long time to see her and I was not disappointed. I said on leaving that I would certainly return to the Piece Hall as it is such a special venue. The only downside on the night was some of the stewarding but that was not going to bring down a wonderful night.

  • Outstanding Performance

Fabulous night watching PJ Harvey at the Piece Hall in Halifax. She was just outstanding especially as she hasn't toured for 7 years, as were the band. Crystal clear. I've never been to a gig where the audience was silent intently listening to her sing her first song. This is the first time we've been to this venue, we were suitably impressed. Paid a bit extra for a balcony view, and what a view. Especially as it rained last night. This also came with a private bar and toilets. No queuing. Very well organised. We'll be going back for a proper daytime visit as there are 3 floors of independent artisans, makers, sellers and cafes.

  • Spellbinding performance

by Sheavi on 21/08/2024The Piece Hall - HalifaxRating: 5 out of 5

A mesmerising show from PJ Harvey and band. The first half of the gig songs were mostly from her latest album - melodic and absorbing before the second half with a more upbeat rockier feel with the odd slower ballad. A stunning voice and onstage presence, with a band that is tight and note perfect. Unforgettable night in a beautiful venue.

  • Great event, music et al

Fantastic live performance from all the artist, especially PJ Harvey. Beautiful evening, lots of space to enjoy the music, and reasonably priced drinks.

  • A magical evening.

by West Dorset Dinosaur on 20/08/2024Gunnersbury Park - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

A perfect summer concert under a melting moon. Polly Jean voice and stage craft were in top form. The first half of the set involved an immaculate performance of her enchanting ethereal album 'Inside the year dying'. The second part involved her most famous songs spread over her career. The biggest cheers were for the songs off the first two albums but my favourites. As someone who lives close to PJ in West Dorset I loved 'The Garden' and 'White Chalk'. As someone lucky enough to see PJ's secret concert in Abbotsbury during June it has been a magical summer of music. All the supporting act were good but special mention needs to go to Big Thief; what a great live band.

  • Perfect PJ performance

by Sharon on 19/08/2024Gunnersbury Park - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

4 fantastic acts that were more musical and theatrical than the usual day festival culminating with an iconic performance by PJ who kept crowd happy with mix of the new which i loved and older stuff which the die hard fans loved so everyone was happy. I found 3 new artists to follow now, absolutely loved 2 of them. BIG THIEF had a big crowd for them. I thought the venue, timings, were all perfect.. I would definitely come again to Gunnersbury Park and the area. The only downside was that most drinks were in cans instead of selling reusable plastic pints for £2 and putting draught beer on which keeps the site clean it got a bit crunchy underfoot after a while with people dropping litter and prefer drinks not cans but I drank mixers and they were in paper cups so that was good.

  • Outstanding performance - so glad we made it in the end

by Linds on 19/08/2024Gunnersbury Park - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

Our hellish journey down on Avanti rail was more than worth it (though sadly we missed the first support acts because of their delays). An outstanding performance from PJ Harvey and her band. Wonderful vocals, music and performance. PJ Harvey always has a fantastic stage presence and the music is sublime with a good mix of the newest material and some old favourites. I have to admit to being unfamiliar with the support act Big Thief, but really enjoyed their set despite being unfamiliar with any of their songs, so will not be going off to find a bit more about them.

  • So Very Disappointing
