Arrigo Boito after William Shakespeare
13 September – 17 October | 10 Performances | Running time: 2hrs 50mins
ENO celebrates the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth with a new production of Otello, Verdi’s greatest Shakespearean opera.
Set on the Cypriot coast, Shakespeare’s tragedy of deception, love and overwhelming jealousy, in which the Moorish army general Otello and his new wife Desdemona are destroyed by the manipulative Iago, is vividly conveyed through some of Verdi’s most powerful and tender music.
Award-winning director David Alden returns to the London Coliseum following his recent triumphant production of Peter Grimes to stage his first Verdi for ENO in many years. He is reunited with Grimes collaborators ENO Music Director Edward Gardner and tenor Stuart Skelton, who sings Otello for the first time. Baritone Brian Mulligan makes his role debut as Iago, while rising star soprano Leah Crocetto makes her UK operatic debut as Otello’s unjustly accused wife, Desdemona. With set and costumes by Jon Morrell (Top Hat, 2013 Olivier Award for Best Costume Design), this new production promises to launch the 2014/15 Season at ENO with all the theatrical and musical panache that have earned the company such critical and audience acclaim.
