About Norma - English National Opera
A close-knit community threatened by unstoppable change. A doomed love triangle in time of war. And a betrayal that will lead a woman to make the ultimate sacrifice.
Norma explores the life of an enclosed community desperate to protect its beliefs and traditional way of life in the face of change. Award-winning director Christopher Alden (Partenope, Rigoletto) returns to ENO for our first-ever production of Bellini’s indisputable bel canto masterpiece.
Celebrated for its finely shaped melodies and exquisite arias (notably ‘Casta diva’), Norma is full of ravishing music. Alden’s critically admired production sets the action in a rural community during the late nineteenth century, in a staging described, when seen at Opera North, as ‘alive, energising and absorbing’ (Daily Telegraph).
Rising star soprano Marjorie Owens, a recent Aida at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, makes her UK operatic debut in the demanding title role. Leading British tenor Peter Auty plays the love-rat Pollione who cheats on Norma. Bel canto specialist Stephen Lord conducts.
