About
Nickelback add UK dates to their hugely successful Get Rollin' tour world tour
Sure, they’ve been the butt of a joke or two in their time, but Nickelback will always have the last laugh. The rockers from small-town Canada became one of the biggest-selling rock bands of their generation, and it was no accident. Their songwriting has always been studiously catchy, their singalong potential incredible, and their tracks eminently air-guitarable. And with newest album Get Rollin’, they’ve proved that they’ve got more than nostalgia in them — Nickelback still rock.
Nickelback (current lineup vocalist/guitarist Chad Kroeger, guitarist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger and drummer Daniel Adair) formed in 1995 in Hanna, a small town in Alberta, Canada. The fledgling band self-released their debut album Curb in 1996, debuting a gritty, high-octane grunge sound. In 1998, they released the follow-up album, The State. These albums plus the band’s self-directed work ethic impressed A&Rs, leading to their 1999 signing with EMI Canada and Roadrunner Records. In 2000, they reissued The State worldwide via their new labels, with singles ‘Leader of Men’ and ‘Breathe’ becoming top-10 hits on the US rock chart.
In 2001, the band had their mainstream breakout with third album Silver Side Up. It peaked at No.1 on the UK Albums Chart and No.2 in the US, while the iconic lead single ‘How You Remind Me’ topped the US charts and received a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. The track became the most played song of 2002 in the United States, and has since been certified quadruple-platinum. The band went on to tour extensively, including making their UK festival debut at V Festival 2002.
In 2003 came Nickelback’s fourth album, The Long Road. The album debuted a heavier sound, and lead single ‘Someday’ was another top-10 hit in the UK, US and Canada. The Long Road received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album, while ‘Someday’ and fellow single ‘Feelin’ Way Too Damn Good’ were nominated for Best Rock Song and Best Hard Rock Performance respectively. The album was also named one of the best 200 albums of the decade by Billboard.
Nickelback released their fifth album All the Right Reasons in 2005. Featuring their most arena-ready songwriting, singles ‘Photograph’, ‘Far Away’ and ‘Rockstar’ all became top-10 singles in the US — making Nickelback the first rock band of the 2000s to have three top-10 singles from the same album. The latter song in particular went on to become a major hit in the UK, peaking at No.2 in the charts and becoming their most successful single to date on this side of the pond. Nickelback continued to tour worldwide in support of the album, including support slots for Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones.
In 2008 the band released the album Dark Horse, which was certified platinum three weeks later. Lead single ‘Gotta Be Somebody’ became another US top-10 hit, while following singles ‘If Everyone Cared’ and ‘Burn It to the Ground’ received Grammy nominations for Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Hard Rock Performance respectively. The band’s ensuing world tour included several stints in UK arenas. In 2010, the band performed ‘Burn It to the Ground’ at the Vancouver Winter Olympics closing ceremony.
Nickelback released their seventh album Here and Now in 2011, which debuted at No.2 in the Billboard Hot 200 chart. They completed another massive UK arena tour in 2012 amid extensive world touring, and returned again in 2013 in support of their compilation album The Best of Nickelback Volume 1. In 2014 Nickelback signed to Republic Records and released their eighth album, No Fixed Address. This one was a departure in its incorporation of EDM elements, while lead single ‘Edge of a Revolution’ was noted for its politically-charged lyrics. The band returned to UK arenas on a positively reviewed tour in 2016, with the Manchester Evening News describing the show as “a perfect reminder of why so many still enjoy their music”. In 2017 Nickelback released the album Feed the Machine, with another UK tour following in 2018.
In 2022, the band released their tenth album, Get Rollin’. The record received positive reviews, with Kerrang! declaring it “addictive” and “a great rock album” in a 4-star review. The band were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2023. In 2024, the band will bring the Get Rollin’ world tour to the UK, their first trip to this side of the Atlantic in six years, featuring support from The Lottery Winners.
