About
Enter The ‘Misoverse’
Miso Extra’s storytelling style of rap is a reflection of her deeply personal melting pot of influences. Shaped by cinema, underground hip hop, and literature, her immersive multi-hyphenate output is truly in a world of its own. It’s her ‘Misoverse’.
Born in Hong Kong to a Japanese mother and British father, her family eventually relocated to London after a period in Japan. During her childhood the future artist would connect with Studio Ghibli, seeking sanctuary and escapism in Hayao Miyazaki’s fantastical animated worlds. Imagination and possibility was seemingly limitless, yet, a young Miso Extra never dreamed of becoming a musician – despite singing and playing violin from an early age – primarily due to the lack of representation for people like her in the music industry.
But the singer/rapper/producer’s ambition and invention couldn’t be quelled, even by limitations with her studio equipment. During the pandemic, Miso Extra came into being, reframing the racist taunts of “me so horny” that followed her growing up as an outsider in the UK. Like the spirited central female characters of Studio Ghibli, Miso was defiant and curious in her music-making, though she took her time when it went to making it public.
That was until 2021, when she released her debut single ‘Adventures Of TrickyNDuke’, a tribute to the producers she’d been collaborating with for the past year, and later even sharing a studio with. Several singles followed, including ‘Great Taste’ in 2022 – the title track of her debut EP – which featured British-Indian artist Nayana IZ.
Even from her earliest output, Miso Extra indicated her maximalist approach to songwriting and producing, ensuring that her dual heritage was honoured – rapping and singing in both English and Japanese - as was her passions for underground hip-hop icons like MF DOOM and J Dilla, as well as indie music, jazz, film soundtracks, and the food of her origins. Then Transgressive Records came calling.
Miso Extra blended further influences in her multiverse of sounds, resulting in her 2023 sophomore EP, MSG. Named after the flavour enhancer, known as the root of taste, Miso Extra said MSG would be “umami for the ears” – with greater resources at her disposal, the EP was slicker and far more sumptuous. Flitting between Japanese and English delivery, Miso embodies the roster of characters she creates, relaying both internal disarray and unbridled joy in her two mother tongues. ‘50/50’ was written as a reminder for Miso to take stock of her progress whilst she’s running at pace, and her notoriety certainly picked up speed throughout 2023.
Capping off a stellar year, she released double A-side ‘2nd Floor / Constant Surprises’. Spring-boarding into 2024, Miso Extra is confirmed for slots at SXSW, Simple Things Festival in Bristol, Get Together Festival in Sheffield, The Great Escape in Brighton, as well as a hometown headline show at London’s The Lower Third.
