About

With ethereal vocals and intricate beats, Milan Ring is credited for spearheading Australia’s R&B renaissance

Born and raised in Sydney, Milan Ring is an accomplished singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer, known for her genre-blurring music which layers organic and electronic sounds with silky R&B-inspired vocals. The result is a blissed-out sound, atmospheric and lush, that beguiles the listener with sonic escapism to the sun-kissed Aussie coast.

Growing up listening to the likes of Aaliyah, Missy Elliot and Tupac, Milan Ring also sought alternative inspiration from guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, BB King and Joe Pass. After learning the guitar herself, Milan began studying music production and audio engineering, whilst gigging and touring as a session guitarist in her spare time. Milan began making and releasing her own music in 2010, starting with her first EP Glassy Eyes. A formative fusion of her now signature genre-defying sound, Glassy Eyes was followed up in 2014 with a further three EPs and a number of singles. In 2018, Milan Ring started her own record label ‘MXMAY’ in order to take back control over her work, whilst also allowing her to explore creative pursuits in fashion and art.

Through her label, Milan Ring released several singles and EPs, including ‘Say To Me’, which was nominated for ‘Most Performed R&B / Soul Work’ at the 2021 APRA Awards. Soon after, she was signed to her current home of Astral People Recordings, with whom she released her 2021 debut album I’m Feeling Hopeful. Written, recorded, executive produced and mixed exclusively by Milan herself, I’m Feeling Hopeful was met with critical acclaim for its authentic self-expression, accomplished guitar work and expert production. The album was named both triple j and Sydney’s radio FBi’s ‘album of the week’, meanwhile earning a very respectable 9/10 score from The Line of Best Fit. A sold-out album tour soon followed, along with an award for ‘Best Live Act’ from FBi.

Milan Ring is revered for her captivating one-woman live shows, translating her combination of analogue and digital sounds to the live setting by complementing her guitar picking with complex live-looping and rhythmically compelling soundscapes. When paired with her contemporary vocals and lyrics exploring themes of love and self-discovery, Milan Ring’s live performances are an immersive experience. As a result, she has earned coveted support slots for several notable artists, including Leon Bridges, Arlo Parks, Masego and Sampa The Great. Back in the studio, Milan Ring has enjoyed extensive collaborations with other Australian and international artists (both behind the scenes and as a featured performer), from Chance The Rapper’s group The Social Experiment, to Questlove.

Now based in Berlin, Milan Ring released her second studio album Mangos in May of this year, showcasing once again her masterful ability to combine genre-spanning alt-pop and funk influences with her ever-present R&B roots. Featuring singles ‘Mangos’, ‘Quicksand’, and ‘Photograph’, the introspective album catalogues an exact summer-to-summer year of Milan’s life, spent falling in and out of love. Harnessing woozy guitars, Milan’s signature soul-inspired vocals glide from whisper-like tones to powerful refrains with ease, whilst evoking balmy summer evenings spent exploring new romance.
