The world’s best squash players descend on Manchester

The Manchester Open squash championship is a popular and prestigious Professional Squash Association World Tour Silver event.

In July 2021, the PSA announced it would be back this year to play host to the top men’s and women’s squash players in the world. Due to the impact of Covid-19 on international travel, the Manchester Open was moved to 9 – 13 August 2021 and is being staged with support from Manchester City Council.

The format for 2021 will see 48 of the world’s best players battle it out at Manchester’s National Squash Centre for the PSA World Tour Silver title. They’ll go head-to-head with a $140,000 prize purse also at stake to be split equally across the men’s and women’s draws.

At the 2020 edition of the Manchester Open, men’s World No.2 Mohamed ElShorbagy and women’s World No.4 Nour El Tayeb took the titles. The Egyptian duo won the first PSA World Tour event to take place following the suspension of the tour due to Covid-19 with wins over Karim Abdel Gawad and Camille Serme, respectively.

Organised and run by the PSA, the Manchester Open was launched in 2019 starting with a Women’s Silver event at which Wales’ own Tesni Evans claimed the title against New Zealand’s Joelle King.

August is set to be an exciting month for squash as it will be the first time spectators have been able to attend a UK event since March 2020.
