About

American indie pop and folktronica artist known for her singular sound and euphoric live performances

Maggie Rogers may have had a meteoric rise thanks to a viral video, but that’s not to say that she came out of nowhere. Her entry into music came at age seven when she learnt to play the harp, inspired by the music of Holst and Vivaldi. Just a few years later she had added piano and guitar to her repertoire and began to explore pop and folk music. Her first songwriting accolade came when she was still in high school, winning a contest run by Berklee College of Music whilst attending one of their programmes. Wasting no time, her final year of high school was spent recording The Echo, which became her first self-released album.

After a brief foray into music journalism, Rogers formed the band Del Water Gap with singer-songwriter S. Holden Jaffe. They played together for six months before separating to focus on solo projects. Rogers released another folk album independently in 2014, entitled Blood Ballet. However, on a trip to Berlin with friends she went clubbing and discovered a love for dance music. The genre began to have an influence on her songwriting.

It wasn’t until 2016 that Rogers got her first mainstream exposure. Whilst studying at NYU, Rogers participated in a masterclass by visiting guest Pharrell Williams and played him her song ‘Alaska’. A video of Williams’ awed reaction went viral, boosting streams of both of Rogers’ independent albums and leading to attention from major record labels. She wound up negotiating a unique contract with Capitol Records, in which she agreed to license her music to them through her own imprint, Debay Sounds.

Rogers released an EP, Now That The Light Is Fading, in 2017, followed by her first major studio album in 2019. Heard It In A Past Life debuted at No.2 on the US Billboard 200 and earned Rogers a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. In November 2020 she collaborated with Pheobe Bridgers on a cover of ‘Iris’ by the Goo Goo Dolls, with all proceeds going to Fair Fight Action. The song was only available for one day but still managed to top the Digital Song Sales chart. It was also both artists’ first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at No.57.

Later that same year, Rogers released Notes From The Archive: Recordings 2011-2016. The compilation album consists of songs from her recording career not released under a major label, with some tracks from her independent albums, and some entirely unreleased.

Rogers’ second studio album, Surrender, will be released 29 July 2022. The album’s lead single ‘That's Where I Am’ dropped on April 8th, with Rogers performing the song for the first time live at the 2022 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival.
