About
Multi-Platinum-selling New Zealand singer-songwriter who sprang to fame in 2013 with Royals
When she burst into the charts in 2013, Ella Yelich-O'Connor punctured many misconceptions about contemporary pop music. Where so many of her peers and predecessors were dayglo, lovestruck or both, the artist better known as Lorde proved pop could be dark, moody and thought-provoking while still topping every chart across the land.
If you’re going to be judged by the company you keep, Bruce Springsteen and Jack White have covered Lorde. Run The Jewels remixed her. Jack Antonoff has collaborated with her. Yet none of that has been essential to her rise. Lorde’s unquestionable talent and enigmatic individuality has seen to that.
Born in Auckland in 1996, Lorde began performing as a duo with her friend Louis MacDonald in her early teens. A talent show win and an appearance on Radio New Zealand paved the way to a development deal with Universal. Her label introduced her to Joel Little, formerly of pop punks Goodnight Nurse, and the two struck up a productive partnership. Their first collaboration was the Love Club EP in 2012.
Love Club started to make waves in New Zealand, mainly thanks to the exponential popularity of the song Royals. By summer 2013, the song was ubiquitous around the globe, going to No.1 in both the US and the UK and covered in pubs from Auckland to Aberdeen. Off the back of its success, her debut album Pure Heroine went Platinum five times over at home and triple Platinum in the US.
Lorde teamed up with Jack Antonoff (Bleachers, Fun.) for her second album, Melodrama. Released in 2017, it was widely heralded as an impressive step forward. Only 20 and with two acclaimed albums to her name, Lorde was already a genuine phenomenon.
In 2021, Lorde teased her new album, Solar Power, with the release of the eponymous single. True to its title, the song found the New Zealander in a sunnier mood than previous releases. Shortly after the single’s release, Lorde confirmed UK tour dates set for May and June 2022. An extra Lorde show was added at Alexandra Palace on 28 June 2022.
