About Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is an American rapper who was born in 1982 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He became the youngest person ever signed to Cash Money Records at the age of just nine, and spent the next eight years in a number of successful hip-hop groups before breaking out as a massive international solo artist in 1999. In 2012, Lil Wayne broke a long-standing record held by Elvis for the most male vocal entries in the Billboard 100, with 109 tracks charting.

Lil Wayne first hooked up with fellow Cash Money rapper Lil Doogie to form The B.G.'z in 1991, and the pair later added Juvenile and Young Turk to the crew and re-named themselves Hot Boys in the mid nineties. The southern hip-hop foursome had success with their first album, Get It How U Live, but it was their second, Guerrilla Warfare, that put the group — and Lil Wayne especially — on the map in 1999.

Wayne's debut as a solo artist was his first record to hit platinum when Tha Block is Hot was released in 1999, to critical and commercial success. This was followed by even greater successes for Lights Out and 2002's 500 Degreez, which went gold. In 2004, he featured on the Destiny's Child hit single, Soldier, as well as releasing the first in his Carter series of albums. Tha Carter I in 2004, Tha Carter II in 2005 and Tha Carter III in 2008 all sold very well, with the last being his biggest-selling record so far. In 2010, he strayed from his usual path with a rock album called Rebirth, which also went gold. He followed this up with a return to his rapping roots with I'm Not A Human Being in the same year and his 2011 double-platinum album Tha Carter IV.

Lil Wayne has collaborated with a who's who of the rap and hip-hop industry, including Akon, Chris Brown, Young Jeezy, Busta Rhymes and Jay Z. He has performed at countless MTV Music Awards shows and huge events such as the Virgin Mobile Music Fest alongside Kanye West and at the Voodoo Experience in New Orleans. A multiple winner at the Grammy Awards, MTV Music Awards, Billboard Awards and MOBO awards, Lil Wayne is one of the biggest-selling rap artists of all time.
