About
The soul-funk sensation is releasing her self-titled album in July 2020
Born and raised in south London, Lianne La Havas – her formal name is Lianne Charlotte Barnes – enjoyed a melting pot of influences. Lianne took her artist name from her Greek father Henry Vlahavas, an accomplished instrumentalist, whilst her Jamaican mother Lorraine Barnes often listened to music by the likes of Jill Scott and Mary J. Blige.
Surrounded by jazz, reggae, R&B and urban pop throughout her youth, Lianne shaped her unique indie soul-folk sound.
Beginning her music career with the band Paris Parade alongside Christian Pinchbeck (now part of the duo Elephant), it wasn’t long before she struck out on her own path.
Lianne released the solo EP Lost & Found, featuring a duet with Willy Mason on the track No Room For Doubt, in 2011. Later that year she toured as support for Bon Iver, and began to attract serious attention.
2012 turned out to be a stellar year for Lianne. Not only did she release her debut album, Is Your Love Big Enough?, but she was also nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and named in BBC’s Sound Of 2012 poll. She made a memorable performance on Jools Holland’s show and opened for Alicia Keys at the MTV Crashes Manchester event – both of which gained her praise and widespread exposure.
Lianne released her second album Blood in 2015. Inspired by her heritage as well as a trip to her family’s home in Jamaica, it was a bolder and more mature collection which included the popular songs Unstoppable and What You Won’t Do.
Her third album, the self-titled Lianne La Havas, arrives on 17 July 2020. Earlier this year, Lianne joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Jules Buckley at London's Barbican Hall to perform Bittersweet, one of its featured tracks. In May 2020, she also unveiled the stunning single Paper Thin and Can't Fight from the forthcoming album.
In advance of its arrival, Lianne has also announced a one-off solo live show to be live streamed across five time zones. Called Lianne La Havas – Live From The Roundhouse, London, the event takes place on Wednesday 15 July 2020 and includes new material from Lianne La Havas as well as popular songs from her first two records.
The album Lianne La Havas is available for purchase here.
