LCD Soundsystem deliver THE most energetic gig
by Glasgow Jacky on 04/07/2024Barrowland Ballroom - GlasgowRating: 5 out of 5How do you describe adequately the LCD Soundsystem show at The Barrowland on 2 July. To start with, I looked up some common synonyms of 'Energetic' and came up with the following: active, dynamic, enterprising, industrious, lively, powerful, spirited, sprightly, spry, strong, tireless, vigorous. Anyone who witnessed the euphoria that enwrapped the audience would probably add a few more as, for the best part of to hours, James Murphy led his band through a set list that oozed class. The very brief interludes during the performance just about gave you time to catch your breadth, from the moment they were cheered onto the stage until the very last note rang out. The opening chords of each of the fifteen songs that formed the set were met with a wall of cheers, a sea of raised hands, an acknowledgement that LCD Soundsystem were at the pinnacle of their career. Next year will see the 20th anniversary of their eponymous debut album release however, a look around the audience would testify that along with a fan base being built up during the mid-noughties, they have captured a second wave of Generation Z acolytes. The set list from the gig. Great music, but like most studio based recordings, it doesn't capture the dynamic interaction of the band and the audience. Across the two hours there were many highlights at play. Tribulations was made for dancing, even in the enclosed confines of the capacity filled The Barrowland. I Can Change gave James more than ample opportunity to hit the high notes many would be familiar with. As with other songs on the night, the ability to be pitch perfect added a quality that is often missing in other singers. It could be argued that Losing My Edge is a diatribe of all the things that people face, or even want to face, on a day to day basis. What make it stand out though is a steady dance beat that lets the rapping vocals blend effortlessly into a tune for the ages. For some of us older gig goers, it might be a surprise to learn that Jump into the Fire is a cover of a Harry Nilsson song from his Nilsson Schmilsson album. Listening to the original you can understand why it's the closing entry for the show tonight ahead of the obligatory encore. It's full of brutal dynamism and this was relayed in wave upon wave of bouncing bodies across The Barrowland floor. And, as the clock moved towards the 11pm curfew hour, the band let rip with their pièce de résistance, an encore of three tracks that confirm their place as one of the best live acts currently on tour. The encore of Dance Yrself Clean revved up the crowd immediately while New York, I love You But You're Bringing Me Down was the only time the gig felt like it fell below 100 beats per minute. And finally All My Friends closed the set. The simple yet incendiary piano melody sends the crowd wild and until the closing beat, the band were faced with The Barrowland crowd going absolutely wild. There can be no doubt that, of it's genre, this has to be one of the classic songs ever recorded and performed live. 'We'll be back' claimed James as they show finally came to an end with a deafening roar of appreciation permeating from every corner. I suspect 'We'll be back too' would be the thoughts of everyone who enjoyed the spectacle.
