About
Heartfelt, emotionally earnest indie rock
An earnest purveyor of heartfelt indie rock, Kevin Devine started his career around the turn of the millennium with highly regarded New York emo band Miracle of 86. Towards the end of the band’s short lifespan, Devine started to explore other avenues for songs that didn’t fit with the band’s sound, and released his solo debut, Circle Gets The Square, in 2002. The emotionally fraught indie rock of his follow-up, 2003’s Make The Clocks Move, placed him in similar territory to Bright Eyes and Dashboard Confessional.
Miracle Of 86’s split left Devine to focus on his solo work. His third album, 2005’s Split The Country, Split The Street raised his profile enough to earn him a jump up to a major label for Put Your Ghost To Rest, recorded with producer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Guided By Voices) and released in 2006.
His major label stay was short, but Devine’s fanbase continued to grow. Put Your Ghost To Rest was re-released in 2008 and Devine toured extensively in support. Brother’s Blood followed in 2009, accompanied by a tour with Manchester Orchestra. Devine teamed up with members of the support act to form Bad Books, releasing three records together between 2010 and 2019.
Devine continued at a prolific rate throughout the next decade. Between The Concrete And Clouds arrived in 2011, followed by two albums in 2013: Bulldozer and Bubblegum – the latter recorded with his touring ensemble The Goddamn Band. A series of split singles titled Devinyl Splits arrived in 2015, including collaborations with Tigers Jaw and Matthew Caws of Nada Surf. Further instalments in 2016, 2018 and 2019 included Craig Finn (The Hold Steady), David Bazan (Pedro The Lion), John K Samson (The Weakerthans).
Devine released the well-received Instigator in 2016, with an acoustic version titled We Are Who We’ve Always Been a year later. It would be six years before Devine released another solo record. Nothing’s Real, So Nothing’s Wrong arrived in March 2022.
