About
The underground house music stalwart
Born and raised in New Jersey, Kerri Chandler comes from a family of jazz musicians. As a child he often accompanied his father to gigs, so by the time he was 13, he was already spinning records and learning to produce music.
During the ’80s, Chandler became a resident DJ at the seminal Newark nightspot Club Zanzibar.
Atlantic Records released his debut singles Super Lover/Get It Off in 1991. The following year, Chandler launched Madhouse Records, his own label as a joint venture with Mel Medalie’s Champion Records, and began working with an array of soulful house artists who shaped the sound of garage throughout the ’90s.
Madhouse’s first release was the 1992 six-track sampler called A Basement, A Red Light & A Feelin’. Numerous singles, EPs and collaborations followed from Matrix (Chandler’s alias) as well as from Dreamer G, Christopher McCray, Jerome Sydenham, Dennis Ferrer and Roy Ayers. By the end of the decade, Chandler was a revered house artist known for merging elements of jazz, soul, funk and hip hop in his music.
Since the ’00s Chandler has remained busy not only with Madhouse, but he also launched a sister imprint called MadTech. In 2002, he released two big albums: the retrospective 10 Years Of Madhouse and a second volume of A Basement, A Red Light & A Feelin’. He’s also been pushing boundaries with new artists like Voyeur, Roog, Dennis Quin and T.Williams.
To celebrate Madhouse’s landmark anniversary in 2017, he released 25 Years Of Madhouse (Mixed & Compiled By Kerri Chandler).
In early 2021, Chandler confirmed details to bring Spaces & Places, a six-hour clubbing experience showcasing house music’s best loved records while featuring live projection mapping and holograms, to London’s Roundhouse on 28 November 2021.
