About
English singer-songwriter and two-time BRIT award winner
In 2012, Jorja Smith uploaded a cover of Earthquake’s ‘Labyrinth’ to YouTube after much convincing by a friend.
Only 15 at the time, she caught the attention of record producer Guy Moot. Under Moot’s mentorship, Smith began working in earnest on her music career, balancing her schoolwork with writing sessions in London. At the age of 18, Smith moved to London full time to write songs. Her debut single, ‘Blue Lights’, was released to SoundCloud in 2018. Although ‘Blue Lights’ racked up 400,000 views on SoundCloud within its first month, it was second single ‘Where Did I Go?’ that really helped Smith’s career to take off, after Drake named it his favourite track of the moment in Entertainment Weekly.
Following Drake’s endorsement, Smith joined the rapper on his Boy Meets World tour in 2017, appearing as a special guest. She also featured in two tracks on Drake’s mixtape, More Life. That same year, Smith would go on to work with Kali Uchis and Preditah, and she would also release her third single, ‘Teenage Fantasy’. She closed out 2017 with the announcement that she would receive the Brit Critic’s Choice Award – the first independent artist to do so.
Smith kicked off 2018 with a string of high-profile collaborations, including Stormzy, Kendrick Lamar and Rag’n’Bone Man. Announced in the spring, her debut studio album, Lost & Found, arrived in June 2018. Written over a five-year period, the album received critical acclaim, and Smith was praised for her polished songwriting and gentle vocals. The rest of the year saw her touring the record across the UK, Europe and North America.
In 2019, Smith was back on the road, co-headlining a North American tour with previous collaborator Uchis. She also picked up her second BRIT, this time for Best British Female Solo Artist. Over the next couple of years she would work with Burna Boy and Popcaan, and host her own BBC Radio 3 show, Tearjerker, which explored the healing power of music. 2021 saw the release of EP Be Right Back, which Smith described as a “waiting room” whilst she prepared to release her sophomore record. That record was Falling or Flying, announced in the summer of 2023 and set to arrive in September. In support of the album, Smith also announced a string of intimate headline shows in Birmingham, Manchester and London.
In November 2024, Smith announced UK dates in London, Manchester and Wolverhampton for May and June 2025.
