Californian rockers whose sound surfs along nu-metal, funk, and exquisite pop melodies
Incubus formed in 1991 when they were mere 10th-grade teenagers, hence the band name, which was derived from a horny mythical demon according to the Dictionary definition. Growing up in Calabasas, California, the four school friends – singer Brandon Boyd, guitarist Mike Einziger, drummer José Pasillas and bassist Alex Katunich – set out to expand on the frenetic, fast-paced funk-rock that their idols Red Hot Chili Peppers produced throughout the previous decade.
Recruiting hip-hop turntablist Gavin Koppel (aka DJ Lyfe) saw Incubus’ sound broaden from funk to deck-scratching thrash to rap metal across their first handful of albums and EPs, including the self-released Fungus Amongus in 1995, and S.C.I.E.N.C.E. two years later on Epic/Immortal.
After securing support slots with Korn, Primus, 311, and Sublime, as well as replacing Koppel with DJ Chris Kilmore, Incubus began gaining serious traction with their 2000 nu-metal follow-up, Make Yourself. Led by singles ‘Pardon Me’ and ‘Stellar’, it was the wistful, wave-riding ballad ‘Drive’ that broke Incubus into the top 10 of the US charts for the very first time in 2001, in a year that’d prove to be pivotal in their trajectory to headline act in their own right.
Whilst ‘Drive’ continued to resonate with a new mainstream audience, Incubus were already working on Morning View, the 2001 album which is largely considered to be their opus. Success came flooding their way, as did their fair share of turmoil – legal disputes and the departure of founding bassist Alex Katunich, who was replaced by The Roots’ Ben Kenney within a matter of days. Incubus swiftly got to work on their next album, 2004’s A Crow Left Of The Murder..., a collection of emotionally heightened alternative rock songs. Politically-minded lead single ‘Megalomaniac’ bagged the band their first and only GRAMMY Award nomination to date.
Light Grenades landed in the US album charts at number two in 2006, before the band announced an informal hiatus to focus on personal projects. They returned in 2011 with If Not Now, When?, which explored the darker edges of their psyche.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Morning View, Incubus decamped to the original house where they wrote and recorded the album for a livestream concert during the pandemic. Rejuvenated by the experience, the band – with new bassist Nicole Row – completely re-recorded the album in 2024 with two more decades of personal and professional experience to weave into its prized legacy without veering too far from the source material.
Throughout the remaining year and into 2025, Incubus toured Morning View XXIII around the world, including a one-off UK concert at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday 26 April.

It was an awesome show they brought the house down.
I grew up with Incubus, discovering them like many with Drive and then following Morning View from its release! Morning View together with Make Yourself are among my all time favourite albums by an all time favourite band and I was ecstatic to manage and get a ticket for such a special show and it being my first time witnessing the band live (since they've never visited my hometown of Athens, Greece). The band was at the top of their game! The additional songs apart from the Morning View album were a great selection! We could have stayed there watching the band play live the whole night long!
Wow incubus were amazing! They blew me away with their pitch perfect performance, morning view is an amazing album and to get to watch the whole album live set was breathtaking. Anyone who hasn't seen them, don't hesitate they are energetic and their talent will blow your mind.
I did a meet and greet first time with Incubus and will never do it again. Worst money spent, band sat behind a table a metre away, was told just to sit down on a chair in front had photo taken the ushered out not able to talk to the band or have anything signed (got a presigned poster).
