About
British singer-songwriter and BRITs Rising Star winner
Holly Humberstone's pairing of beguiling pop melodies with raw, indie rock textures has proved a powerful combination.
Hailing from Grantham, Humberstone played violin in the Lincolnshire Youth Symphony Orchestra. As a teen, she was attracted to the honest storytelling and intuitive melodies of solo troubadours such as Damien Rice and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, as well as the evocative lyrics of artists like Phoebe Bridgers and HAIM.
By the age of 16, Humberstone was writing her own self-reflective material and creating demos she made with GarageBand on her father’s Mac. She soon built up a fan base with her poignant vignettes and raw videos. After uploading songs to the BBC Music Introducing website, her track 'Hit And Run' started getting airplay. She not only landed a manager but began performing live gigs, including a set on the BBC Introducing stage at 2019’s Glastonbury, among other festivals.
While studying at Liverpool School of Performing Arts she struck up a fruitful creative partnership with Nottingham-born songwriter and Dog is Dead frontman Rob Milton, and together they wrote her 2020 debut single 'Deep End'. Its gritty pathos struck a chord, and later that year it was included on Humberstone's first EP, Falling Asleep At The Wheel, which Variety said marked "the arrival of a major new talent."
The rest of the industry clearly agreed. Lewis Capaldi invited her to join his European tour, and in 2021, having signed a record deal with Polydor, she was among the first 50 acts announced for The Great Escape Festival. Although she was set to play her first ever headline shows at London’s Omeara in early 2021, those gigs were rescheduled to the summer, with several new dates added as part of her Deep End UK tour.
In October 2021 Humberstone performed 'Scarlett' from her second EP The Walls Are Way Too Thin on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Its shimmering title track remains a particular fan favourite.
By the end of the year, Humberstone had won the BRITs Rising Star award. 2022 saw the singer-songwriter tour with Girl in Red and Olivia Rodrigo, while releasing a compilation of all her songs in Can You Afford To Lose Me?
The release of singles such as 'Antichrist' and 'Superbloodmoon' in 2023 pointed to the release of Humberstone's awaited debut studio album. This was confirmed in the summer, with Paint My Bedroom Black set for release in October. To coincide with its release, Humberstone announced UK dates for March 2024 as part of a headline European tour.
