Californian punks who scored huge hits with the albums Dookie and American Idiot

Green Day have announced their 2024 UK tour dates. Preorder the new album, Saviors, here before 15.00 on Tuesday 7 November to gain access to the presale.

Green Day sprang out of the west coast hardcore punk scene in the late 80s and early 90s. The initial trio of Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass) and Al Sobrante (drums) grew their reputation via energetic live shows and the promise of their 1989 debut EP 1000 Hours. Sobrante was replaced by John Kiftmeyer for Green Day’s debut album 39/Smooth and the EP Slappy, but he was soon replaced by Tré Cool just before the band signed to Lookout Records.

The band’s first move on their new home was to reissue their debut album and two EPs as 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. This was followed by the album Kerplunk!, which represented a notable leap forward in songwriting, paving the way for the band to sign to Reprise Records for their third album, Dookie.

Released in 1994, Dookie found Green Day coming of age at exactly the right moment, seizing upon the shift effected by Nirvana in order to jump right to the top of the charts. But where Nirvana tapped into a generation fuelled by alienation and angst, Green Day had an energy and self-effacing sense of humour that was more in keeping with punk heroes such as The Buzzcocks, The Ramones and Stiff Little Fingers.

Mainstream radio and MTV jumped behind singles Longview, Basket Case and When I Come Around, propelling Dookie to the upper echelons of album charts around the world. The band returned in 1995 with Insomniac, which was less instantly catchy than Dookie but hit harder.

The band cancelled a planned European tour, citing impending burnout and instead spending the time working on their fourth album. Released in 1997, Nimrod was a more diverse, textured album that Green Day’s previous efforts, most notably on the fan-favourite acoustic ballad Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life).

It took Green Day three years to follow Nimrod, but the wait resulted in their most sonically adventurous album yet. Warning owed as much to The Kinks as The Buzzcocks as the band was clearly maturing beyond their trademark three-chord breakneck punk.

If the band’s popularity had waned since their Dookie heyday, American Idiot soon righted the ship. Conceived as a rock opera about young suburban Americans disillusioned in the wake of the Gulf War and 9/11, it showcased Green Day at height of their ambition, matched by some of their catchiest songs since Dookie. The album was a huge success and won Grammys for Best Rock Album and Record Of The Year (for the song Boulevard Of Broken Dreams).

Green Day’s seventh studio album, 21st Century Breakdown, saw the band return to the concept album format, this time following a couple through the American urban wilderness. Around the same time, the band had returned to their garage punk roots under the alias The Foxboro Hot Tubs.

That dalliance seemed to take hold, as when Green Day returned to the studio, they’d cast off the pomp of their rock operas and once again embraced their wilder side on a trio of albums released across 2012: ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!. However, in the midst of the release schedule for the trilogy, Billie Joe Armstrong checked himself into rehab to address his substance abuse issues, leaving the band’s immediate future in limbo.

Green Day finally returned in 2016 with Revolution Radio, a stinging, angry record that addressed political issues such as gun control with a fervour reminiscent of their heroes The Clash. This was followed in 2020 by the glammed-up dance punk of Father Of All…

Throughout 2020, Billie Joe Armstrong kept his social media followers entertained with his "No Fun Mondays" series of covers. These were released as the album No Fun Mondays in late 2020. That year also saw the release – after a 17-year wait – of the second album by Green Day's new wave side project The Network.

Green Day had originally planned to tour in 2020 with Weezer and Fall Out Boy on the Hella Mega Tour but the tour was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In April 2021, Green Day confirmed that the UK tour dates on the Hella Mega tour were moving to June 2022.

In October 2023, Green Day released 'The American Dream Is Killing Me', the first single from the new album, Saviors, due for release on 19 January 2024. The new album will release in the same year Green Day celebrate 30 years of Dookie – the album that changed everything.

by Suzanne on 06/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, getting to see my favourite band at this fantastic venue. Greenday were another level of awesome. They performed the whole two albums Dookie and American Idiot without stopping for a break and that is why they are absolute legends 😁😁. I just want to experience it all again and I have brilliant memories made for life.

  • The best live band around!

by Coop on 03/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

Green Day quite simply are the best live band you can see right now. Playing the Dookie and American Idiot albums in their entireties, plus a mix of new and old songs, Billie Joe and the boys know how to give the crowd a show! Musicianship, singalong choruses, pyrotechnics, and more - this Green Day show had it all and left a packed Wembley crowd extremely satisfied. Perfect night.

OK, so Green Day are my favourite band, so I was bound to enjoy? Too right I was. Brilliant from start to finish. As good as a stadium gig gets.

by Ash on 03/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

So it's like our Team India won the T20 WC same day , so I was split between Rock music & cricket and boy we won the World Cup . Then I walked into wembley stadium with bragging rights of being the World champion, shouting all the way to my seat and then immersed into Green day and that's how Blue day ended with green day… and off course I had " Time of my life "

The final concert of European Tour was an absolute blast, with Green Day at the very top of their game. Dookie, American Idiot and Saviors played brilliantly. The crowd were up for it and weren't let down, I'm sure we'd have stayed all night! The boys continue to make it seem fresh and the new songs are worthy additions to the playlist. Looking forward to North American tour.

  • Excellent Concert.

by SeeJayEss on 03/07/2024Emirates Old Trafford - ManchesterRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show. Good crowd control both on the way in and especially on the way out. More Merchandising stands would be good, especially near to the front of the crowd. Please advertise or announce when the band are due on so that the crowd can plan their timings at the event. Is there a way that the stage at this venue could be higher. That would enable those who are less tall than some of the other crowd members have a better chance of seeing the musicians and the pyros etc on stage. It was a LOT of money to just spend the whole concert looking at the big screens.

  • Green Day Wembley

by Robbury on 02/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

First time seeing Green Day. Energy and performance were excellent as was the communication with the audience. The crowd clearly had a great time and left very happy. Will definitely book again should the opportunity arise 👍

  • Good gig, poor seats

by JEL on 02/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 4 out of 5

The gig was excellent - exactly what you would expect from Green Day. The disappointment was our seats, in the back row under the canopy, and at the very end of the seats being sold, so the view of the stage was very poor as we were almost level with the stage, and being under the canopy / next tier of seating, the sound was distorted. This should be made clear before booking.

  • Absolutely brilliant!!

Green Day were superb, atmosphere was fantastic and the organisation leaving the stadium was so much better than the London Stadium!

  • Great Show Poor Organisation.

by Manny on 02/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 2 out of 5

Fantastic show but the organisation leading up to the was extremely poor. My wife and I had 'Saviours Day' VIP Packages and we were wrongly directed by stewards when we saw the first sign for the Package. We were guided to turnstile J when we had tickets for M. We were told it be OK and could walk to our seats once were in, we were even issued with pitch standing wrist bands which I queried at the time which I was told was correct. When turnstile was opened and we scanned our tickets we refused entry and told to go to M turnstile to gain entry , which did after trying to explain the situation. Once inside no one could direct us to where we should collect our VIP Package and it wasn't clearly signed. It seems these VIP packages are just a way of way of asking extra money and are getting less and less in what you are actually receiving. With ticket prices getting higher and higher the organisation is getting worse. Overall the experience left a bad taste in the mouth and dampened the whole experience of the Day.

  • Absolutely amazing night

by Brian on 01/07/2024Rating: 5 out of 5

Me and my gf was in Section 101, Seats 59/60 we wasn't sure how things would work as it was our 1st time in Wembley Arena to see any events. The line was about half the size of when we joined and got lengthy after we joined so we was thankful we joined when we did. When we approached the turnstiles was easy to use the tickets although was nervous as we had 2 tickets on 1 phone (what didn't matter too much) walking around to find out section took longer as we walked the entire thing to find our section not knowing it was behind us all along 🫣. The staff was helpful when we did find our section and seating and the rest of the event was mind blowing and Billy Joe and the band really took the stage and making sure even those in the crowd at the front who twice got caught in a incident stop the show just to make sure they was ok and get the help to them if they needed it. Amazing night and can't wait to see Green Day come back again to the UK.

  • Fantastic

by JEL on 01/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 3 out of 5

Great evening fantastic band. only thing was our tickets should have been sold as restricted view as unable to see drummer. Section 125. Row 44. Seats 83/84.

  • Amazing

by Jennie on 01/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

Getting to the venue was pretty easy. All the stewards were helpful at directing you to the correct entrance. The band were amazing. Just like listening to the CD! They had so much energy. Kept going for the whole 2hrs and were so grateful to have their fans together for them! Only thing that sucked was exiting the venue, but then how do you get 90,000 people out of one place quickly?!

  • Brilliant night seeing them

by Kel on 01/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

Green Day are brilliant live. Second time seeing them and will be seeing them again when they come back! The two supports acts, Maid of Ace and Nothing But Thieves were also brilliant.

  • Green Day

by Fiona on 01/07/2024Wembley Stadium - LondonRating: 5 out of 5

Band was just amazing. Taking my 10 year old granddaughter to her first ever concert, fantastic memories. Venue food and drink over priced! £12 for 2 small tubs of Ice Cream unreasonable when they cost £2.50 elsewhere.

  • Amazing

Green day were amazing. This is my 5th time seeing them. Only ever seen them in small venues, worried they would bit be as good somewhere so big. But they were better! The crowd interaction was incredible. Loved every single secind. Best live band
