About

The award-winning artist, presenter and author

Acclaimed cross-dressing artist Grayson Perry is as well known for his colourful pottery and tapestries as he is for his books, TV shows and social commentary. Using all these different media, he explores everything from identity and sexuality to religion, social status and what it means to be human.

Born in Chelmsford in 1960, Perry liked ceramics along with wearing women’s clothes from a young age, and he began to identify as a transvestite in his teens. He studied fine arts at Hampshire’s Portsmouth Polytechnic in the early ’80s. After graduating he moved to London, where he appeared in performance pieces and art films. In the evenings he continued to study art and began creating his signature vases, hosting his first solo pottery exhibition in 1984.

By the ’90s, Perry had expanded to textiles, sculpture, fabrics and embroidery plus began appearing in public as his brightly dressed alter-ego often referred to as “Claire”. Among Perry’s most popular early pieces are 1996’s Mother Of All Battles, 2000’s Claire’s Coming Out Dress and 2001’s Cuddly Toys Caught On Barbed Wire.

Perry became the first ceramicist to win the Turner Prize in 2003, and he published an autobiography of his early years titled Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Girl in 2006. Over the years he’s also added TV, radio and stage credits to his name including the 2005 documentary Why Men Wear Frocks.

In 2013 Perry was appointed CBE for his services to contemporary art. He helped design A House For Essex, a building filled with his artwork paying tribute to his home county, in 2015 and released the critically acclaimed book The Descent Of Man in 2016.

Among Perry’s major UK exhibitions in 2020 were The Pre-Therapy Years, and he was also awarded the prestigious Erasmus Prize, the Dutch version of the Nobel Prize. During April’s national lockdown, Perry hosted the popular Art Club TV programme and then in autumn released the series Grayson Perry’s Big American Road Trip.

In late 2020, Perry announced a live tour for autumn 2021 called A Show For Normal People, during which he’ll ask, and possibly answer, all the big questions about the meaninglessness of life.
