About
New York post-hardcore group responsible for the seminal 2000 record Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence
Glassjaw are never going to be mistaken for a prolific band. Health problems, countless line-up changes and long periods of inactivity have resulted in just three albums since 2000. Yet there is absolutely no question that despite this fact, they remain a huge influence on the post-hardcore scene.
The band was formed in Long Island in 1994 by friends Daryl Palumbo and Justin Beck. It wasn’t until 2000 that their debut album arrived. Released on the influential Roadrunner Records label and produced by Ross Robinson (Limp Bizkit, Korn, At The Drive-In), Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence found an eager audience and critical acclaim thanks to its uncompromising combination of metal and post-hardcore.
The ensuing tour was problematic for Palumbo, who had long struggled with Crohn’s disease. As a result, relations with their label got progressively worse, which meant that the band made the jump to Warner for their second album, Worship And Tribute, in 2002. Again, Palumbo had a terrible time on tour, ending up hospitalised and needing surgery after a relapse of his Crohn’s disease. In 2004, word circulated that the whole band, barring Beck, had been fired. It appeared Glassjaw were officially done.
However, Glassjaw proved more resilient than their name suggests, resurfacing in 2005 to play three shows and release an EP of leftover tracks from Worship And Tribute. In 2007, they returned to the UK for the first time since 2002 and soon rumours began swirling that Glassjaw were working on a new album. Palumbo and Beck dropped occasional hints over the coming year, but no new music officially surfaced until 2011, when the band finally unveiled two EPs: Our Color Green (The Singles) and Coloring Book.
Almost ten years after it was mooted, a new album, Material Control, arrived in 2017. The band marked the occasion by heading out on tour with fellow influential post-hardcore act Quicksand.
Glassjaw announced a raft of plans for the 20th anniversary of Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence, but most of these were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2021, Glassjaw announced two UK shows to celebrate the “20 Years+ Anniversary”. The shows, set for May 2022 at Kentish Town Forum, would see them play their debut album in full on the first night, followed by Worship And Tribute in full on the second night.
