About Girl of the Golden West
Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini after David Belasco
2 October – 1 November | 9 Performances | Running time: 2hrs 35mins
Set in the American Wild West during the years of the Californian gold rush, Puccini’s The Girl of the Golden West (La fanciulla del West) follows the lives of saloon-bar owner Minnie and a community of miners who struggle to cope with the harsh realities of survival in a bleak environment. Everyone has put their lives on hold and placed all their hopes on a better future.
Puccini declared The Girl of the Golden West was "a second Bohème, only stronger, bolder and more spacious", and the music has all the lyrical beauty, soaring melodies and ambitious orchestration for which the composer is justly renowned.
Following on from his recent ENO successes (Rodelinda, Julietta, The Tales of Hoffmann), Richard Jones collaborates with designers Miriam Buether and Nicky Gillibrand to direct ENO’s first production of Puccini’s "American" opera in 50 years, bringing his own theatrical response to one of the composer’s least-known mature works. Internationally renowned soprano Susan Bullock, celebrated for her Wagner, Strauss and Puccini roles, returns to ENO to sing Minnie, alongside baritone Craig Colclough and tenor Peter Auty. Already well-established throughout North America and Europe, including engagements at the Torre del Lago Puccini Festival and with the Bavarian and Vienna State Operas, conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson makes her UK operatic debut.
