About

American rapper French Montana was born Karim Kharbouch in 1983 in Morocco. Growing up outside of Casablanca, Karim dreamed of football or rapping stardom, but it would be the latter that became reality. As French Montana, he made the jump from underground mix-tape master to mainstream star, collaborating with the likes of Snoop Dog and running his own record label.

Montana moved to the Bronx when he was 13 and by his late teens he was heavily into the rap scene. He produced DVD mix-tapes titled Cocaine City from around 2002 until 2010, featuring music from all the stars of the underground rap scene and interviews with big names. They also showcased his own work. Montana built up a network of contacts and collaborators while honing his skills, and it was considered only a matter of time before he broke out on his own.

He briefly signed with Konvict Muzik, Akon's label, but a number of delays on the album lead to them parting ways. After being courted by the likes of Rick Ross's Maybach Music Group and the GOOD Music label, owned by Kanye West, French signed with P Diddy's Bad Boy Records, with plans to release his first mix-tape under new management in November 2012. The mix-tape, Mac & Cheese 3, was followed early in 2013 by the release of the debut album Excuse My French. The album jumped into the Billboard Album chart at number four, while hitting the top of the rap and hip-hop charts. Excuse My French had a whole host of guest performers, such as Snoop Dog, Nicki Minaj, Ne-Yo, Lil Wayne and Machine Gun Kelly. Singles released included Pop That, featuring Rick Ross, and Freaks, featuring Nicki Minaj. Over the past two years Montana has toured most of the world, often working with the likes of Akon's and Rick Ross, while usually also bringing his own crew, Flip, Chinx Drugz, Cheeze and Lil Durk.

French Montana is known for his cocky attitude, with a swagger that is matched by his designer clothes from Louis Vuitton and Versace. He takes his rapping inspiration from icons such as Tupac, Snoop Dog and The Notorious B.I.G., as well as more recent names such as Nas and 50 Cent. His 2013 single Pop That, from the Excuse My French album, was nominated for a number of regular BET Awards and was a winner in the BET Hip-Hop Awards category. As well as recording and producing his own music, he also runs and owns Cocaine City Records.
