Fontaines D.C. announce new UK tour dates

Irish post-punks Fontaines D.C. came together at music college in Dublin. Grian Chatten (vocals), Conor Deegan III (bass), Carlos O'Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar) and Tom Coll (drums) bonded over a mutual love of poetry, from Kerouac and Ginsberg to Irish figures such as Yeats and Lorca.

They named their band after the crooner Johnny Fontaine from The Godfather, adding the D.C. (Dublin City) after discovering a similarly named LA band. The band's initial releases were two short volumes of poetry and these lyrical foundations featured prominently on their critically acclaimed 2019 debut album Dogrel. The record blended a muscular post-punk sound with vivid verse barked out in Chatten's charismatic Dublin accent, most notable on singles 'Big', 'Boys In The Better Land' and 'Hurricane Laughter'.

A slew of five-star reviews and album of the year awards followed, notably from Rough Trade and BBC 6 Music, placing the band at the forefront of an Irish post-punk wave alongside The Murder Capital and Girl Band.Relentless touring in the wake of Dogrel took its toll on the band. Back home in Dublin, Chatten's fear of no longer being able to write led to the band quickly setting to work on a follow-up. Their second album, A Hero's Death, was released on 31 July 2020. The band had released the title track as the first single, accompanied by a video starring Irish actor Aiden Gillen (Game Of Thrones, The Wire). The album signalled a move to a darker, blunter sound than its predecessor, while the artwork (featuring the legendary Irish warrior Cú Chulainn) and album title (inspired by the writings of Brendan Behan) showed that Irish literature remained a cornerstone of the band's identity.I n support of the new record, the band embarked on their biggest UK tour yet in May 2021, starting in Edinburgh and winding up with a huge show at London's Alexandra Palace.

Fontaines D.C. released their third album Skinty Fia in 2022. Featuring the tracks 'Jackie Down The Line' and 'Roman Holiday', Pitchfork magazine called the record their "most demanding and musically adventurous album is also its most open-hearted, striking a perfect balance between tough and tender," while The Guardian noted that the "Dublin alt-rockers trade in their punky full-pelt approach for measured, compelling insights."

In April 2024, the band hinted at new material with a teasing visualiser called 'Romance', before releasing their new single 'Starburster' with news of new album Romance being released on 23 August 2024. The band announced a UK and Ireland tour for November & December 2024, including two nights at London's Alexandra Palace, which ends in their native Dublin at the 3Arena on Friday 6 December.

In 2024, Fontaines announced their biggest headline show to date at Finsbury Park for 5 July 2025, alongside Amyl and the Sniffers, Kneecap and more TBA. They also announced that they would play a headline show at Cardiff Castle that same month. A month later they announced their biggest-ever Manchester headline show at Wythenshawe Park for 15 August, with support from English Teacher and Kneecap.

  • What a Performance!

by roisterdoister on 01/12/2024Factory International Manchester - ManchesterRating: 5 out of 5

From arriving at the venue, through to watching the show, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. First time visiting here, staff were friendly and helpful, venue was great, and the band were amazing as ever, easily one of the best live bands around 'in the modern world'...

  • Great gig but I am not keen on the venue

by Polly on 28/11/2024Motorpoint Arena Nottingham - NottinghamRating: 4 out of 5

Fontaines DC pulled it out the bag and delivered a solid performance well received by the crowd. Plenty of singing along to favourite tracks. ,Motor Point Arena as a venue is not my favourite as there felt like there was a lot of dead space which didn't really help with creating an energetic atmosphere. The pauses between each number also affected the flow of energy. The finale was possibly the most energetic part of the set.

  • Very good

  • An old fart enjoying a proper guitar band

by James on 28/11/2024Motorpoint Arena Nottingham - NottinghamRating: 4 out of 5

I was probably too old to be there but really loved it. Brought back memories of Echo & The Bunnymen/Kasabian. The noise was deafening. I could feel it against my body but pulsating enjoyable concert with a rocking audience and fantastic set.

  • Fontaines DC @Motorpoint arena Nottingham

by Mandy on 28/11/2024Motorpoint Arena Nottingham - NottinghamRating: 3 out of 5

I ordered the tickets on the Sunday before the gig on Wednesday, got to the venue our tickets scanned ok but got to our seats & they were already taken, we had been given duplicate tickets, we sat in the last 2 empty chairs on the row but they turned out to be someone elses. I was very stressed, lucky we were near seats that were covered over & not being used so sat there, it was stressful thinking we could get asked to leave. Luckily we were ok & the concert was amazing but surely ticketmaster shouldn't have sold us those tickets.

  • Ticketmaster - not Impressed

by jp on 28/11/2024Motorpoint Arena Nottingham - NottinghamRating: 2 out of 5

What's the point of Ticketmaster selling e-tickets, which you then have to print out!! For this concert the Phone was NOT your ticket!!

  • Fontaines DC - Nottingham

by Tom on 28/11/2024Motorpoint Arena Nottingham - NottinghamRating: 5 out of 5

Had a fantastic night - Fontaines were on fire! Had to travel to Nottingham and used Park and Ride tram (just off the M1) to get into city centre which made things a lot easier, and then short walk to Motorpoint Arena. Arena was a good venue, but it was freezing outside and they seemed to have the aircon inside so a bit chilly until the band started up. The band played most of their best numbers really well the sound was great and crowed joined in with lyrics.

  • Amazing !!!

by Brownie on 25/11/2024Utilita Arena Cardiff - CardiffRating: 5 out of 5

I liked the support band Sorry very good and will be listening to them again. Fontaines DC were fantastic from start to finish. The lighting and video were superb. I have all 4 albums and they certainly played a wide variety of excellent music. I look forward to seeing them at Cardiff Castle next summer. Just a brilliant band with new exciting and enjoyable music.

  • the sound was dreadful - waste of money

by Woodentop on 25/11/2024Utilita Arena Cardiff - CardiffRating: 2 out of 5

Had been looking forward to this for months 3 of our group travelled a very long way for this Very disappointing The band worked really hard, but the sound quality was shameful. Not a single person stood near us was smiling. The sound engineer was paying little attention to what was happening My son is an electronic & sound engineer (& a Leinsterman, no less), & he photographed the screen on the deck - an absolute mess. No balance, just deafening bass. On 1 song it appeared that 1 guitarist was playing in a different key from the rest of his mates (although he obviously wasn't....) We & many others walked out well before the end Merchandise pricing was an absolute rip-off (even the knock off stuff being sold on the pavements outside was overpriced) Sorry lads, your people just didn't do a good job for you. We might see you in Cardiff Castle! ps we all thought the support band was awful, but with reconsideration, & given the above, they might not have been - Sorry! Sláinte!
