Fawlty Towers is a beloved British sitcom that originally aired on BBC2 in 1975 and 1979, featuring John Cleese as its creator and lead. The show is often regarded as one of the best in British sitcom history.

The show follows Basil Fawlty (John Cleese), the eccentric owner of Fawlty Towers, a fictional seaside hotel in Torquay. The humour revolves around Basil's interactions with his wife, Sybil (Prunella Scales), the staff –especially Manuel (Andrew Sachs) – and the diverse hotel guests.

John Cleese is a renowned English actor, comedian, writer and film producer, widely recognised for his influential role in the comedy group Monty Python and his creation and performance in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Born on 27 October 1939, Cleese has left an indelible mark on the world of comedy.

In addition to his significant contributions to Monty Python and Fawlty Towers, Cleese has enjoyed a successful career in film and television. Notable appearances include the Monty Python film series, A Fish Called Wanda, and his role in the James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough.

Fawlty Towers has previously been available to stream on platforms such as BBC iPlayer, UKTV Play, BritBox, Netflix, Google Play and Amazon Prime. Availability is subject to change so we recommend searching for the show on these platforms.

With 12 episodes, each around 30 minutes, Fawlty Towers is a timeless comedy that remains influential despite its short run.

Fawlty Towers was set in the seaside town of Torquay, located on the English Riviera in Devon, England.

While the exterior shots for the series were filmed at the Wooburn Grange Country Club in Buckinghamshire, the overall setting and atmosphere were intended to represent a typical seaside hotel in Torquay. The choice of Torquay as the setting added to the show's charm, as the town is known for its real-life seaside resorts.

The Fawlty Towers interior shots were filmed at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, England.

The original TV cast of Fawlty Towers includes:

John Cleese as Basil Fawlty – The eccentric owner of Fawlty Towers.
Prunella Scales as Sybil Fawlty – Basil's wife, who manages the hotel with a no-nonsense attitude.
Connie Booth as Polly Sherman – The maid and waitress at Fawlty Towers, known for her resourceful nature.
Andrew Sachs as Manuel – The Spanish waiter, whose language barrier and cultural differences often lead to misunderstandings.

These four actors formed the core cast of the series. John Cleese and Connie Booth were also the co-creators and writers of the show and were married at the time. The chemistry and performances of the cast contributed significantly to the success and enduring popularity of Fawlty Towers.

Fawlty Towers was first broadcast in 1975. The second series aired in 1979.

The four-year gap between the two seasons of Fawlty Towers was due to the creative process and the busy schedules of the show's creators and stars, John Cleese and Connie Booth. After the success of the first season in 1975, both Cleese and Booth were involved in other projects, including individual pursuits in acting and writing.
