About

Rising from the Odd Future collective in the early 2010s, Earl Sweatshirt is one of hip-hop’s most distinct and creative voices

Known for his languid flow that shifts effortlessly between confessional alt-rap and darker, horrorcore-inspired storytelling, the ‘Riot!’ rapper has built a career defined by artistic independence, operating outside the bounds of commercial expectation.

Born Thebe Neruda Kgositsile in Chicago in 1994, the rapper and producer first began performing under the name Sly Tendencies before joining Tyler, the Creator’s Odd Future collective in 2009. At just 16, he released Earl (2010), a debut mixtape which highlighted him as a prodigious talent but preceded an untimely stint at boarding school in Samoa for at-risk youth. When he returned to Los Angeles in 2012 (following a fan-backed online campaign to ‘free Earl’), Thebe quickly reestablished himself, clocking up notable guest appearances on Odd Future’s The OF Tape, Vol. 2 and Frank Ocean’s Grammy-winning Channel Orange

Earl’s eagerly anticipated major-label debut arrived in 2013 in the form of Doris. Pairing dense, offbeat lyricism with production both from himself and collaborators like Tyler, the Creator, the record debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and was featured in copious year-end best-of lists by outlets such as Rolling Stone. His (almost entirely self-produced) follow-up, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside (2015), offered a darker, more introspective sound, meanwhile Some Rap Songs (2018) showcased more abstract production and personal themes, influenced by the passing of his father, South African poet Keorapetse Kgositsile.

In 2022, Earl returned with Sick!, a tightly wound ten-track project featuring production from The Alchemist and Black Noi$e, among others. The record continued his exploration of fractured, futuristic beats and concise storytelling. The following year, he surprised fans with Voir Dire, a full collaborative project with The Alchemist that featured the tracks 'Vin Skully' and 'Sentry' and blended Earl’s meditative rhymes with the producer’s textured, soulful soundscapes. Said to have been secretly available on YouTube under a fake name for at least three years before it was officially released, Voir Dire is a testament to Earl’s enduring determination to reject industry convention.

In 2025, Earl released Live Laugh Love, a surprise solo album accompanied by a fittingly unorthodox launch party which saw an Earl Sweatshirt imposter take to the stage to perform. Across its 11 tracks, the album reflects what many critics describe as a softer, more open Earl, now a proud father and husband; despite it's snappy 24-minute runtime, Pitchfork magazine noted that the release was "equal parts heart and style, and is as much about Earl the grown man as Earl the hip-hop head."
