About

Nigerian-American Afrobeats crossover sensation

Singer, songwriter, producer and label boss David Adedeji Adeleke, best known as Davido, has become a worldwide phenomenon. A pioneer in the Afrobeats arena, he’s been leading the charge for cultural fusion while raising its stature in North America, the UK and Europe.

Born in Atlanta of Nigerian heritage, he spent years living between Lagos, London and the US. Davido credits his mother, who enjoyed throwing parties, for his love of music. He first stepped into a studio to visit a cousin at the age of 13, but didn’t start making his own beats until he went to Alabama’s Oakwood University to study business. In the end, Davido dropped out, deciding that music was his career of choice, and he moved to London to develop his vocals.

Davido returned to Nigeria and to academics in 2011. Since education was important to his father, he enrolled at Babcock University and later graduated with a degree in music.

In 2012, Davido released his critically acclaimed debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo, which merged Afrobeats with hip-hop. It featured the widely lauded song Dami Duro produced with Shizzi and his huge crossover hit Back When featuring Naeto C, one of the biggest artists in Nigeria at the time. Omo Baba Olowo went on to win Best R&B/Pop Album at The Headies in early 2013.

That summer, while experimenting with mixing hip-hop and Afro-pop, Davido inspired a dance craze with his standalone track Skelewu. The song was promoted with an instructional dance video, followed by a dance competition that asked fans to upload videos of their moves.

Davido continued his cross-genre onslaught by releasing a steady stream of singles in 2014 and 2015 including Aye, Tchelete (Goodlife) with Mafikizolo, Dodo, Fans Mi with Meek Mill, Owo Ni Koko and The Money with Olamide. Plus he racked up more awards including two consecutive MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Male and a BET Award for Best African Act.

Sony signed Davido in 2016 and a few months later he decided to launch his own label called Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) in Nigeria. Not long after, Davido also signed with RCA Records and released his five-track EP Son Of Mercy.

Several more standalone singles followed throughout 2017 and 2018 – among them the huge hits If, Fall and Assurance – all of which Davido featured on his 2019 full-length album A Good Time. In addition, he recorded other songs with big-name artists from around the world including Chris Brown on Blow My Mind, Popcaan on Risky and Summer Walker on D&G.

By this time, the self-proclaimed King of Afrobeats had become a megastar. Davido performed a sell-out show at London’s O2 in January 2019 – becoming the first solo African artist ever to do so.

In 2020, Davido unveiled his third studio album A Better Time. Among its 11 tracks were collaborations from Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, Nas and Young Thug. The album debuted on Billboards 200 album chart garnering over 560 million streams. In addition to both fan and critical acclaim, Davido’s visibility continued to soar across the globe, with national television appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Jimmy Kimmel Live.
