David Sedaris has been sharing his witty personal essays for decades, observantly writing about life's moments, big and small

Author, playwright, comedian and radio contributor David Sedaris was born in New York but as a child, moved with his five siblings to the suburbs in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Throughout his late teens and early twenties, Sedaris attended both Western Carolina University and Kent State University before dropping out of both. He also tried his hand at performance art but discussed his lack of success in many of his later essays.

Eventually moving in 1983 to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Sedaris worked odd jobs in the city before he began performing at local clubs. While reading a snippet from a diary he had kept a decade earlier, Sedaris made an impression on radio host, Ira Glass, who then asked him to regularly contribute to his show, The Wild Room, on a local radio station. Sedaris credits Glass with changing his life as if he had “waved a magic wand”.

Sedaris’ contribution to The Wild Room and the success that followed led to him launching his own National Public Radio show in 1992, Morning Show. He read an excerpt from his Santaland Diaries which included hilarious tales of his experience working as a Christmas elf at Macy’s.

In 1994, Sedaris published his first collection of short stories, Barrel Fever: Stories And Essays, with Bay Back Books. The collection became a best-seller and was selected by Village Voice Literary Supplement as one of their Favourite Books of the Year.

Sedaris’ second best-seller, Naked, followed in 1997 with Holidays On Ice, compiled of essays about the holiday season, arriving just months later. His next three essay collections – Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family In Corduroy And Denim and When You Are Engulfed in Flames – all joined their predecessors on The New York Times Best Sellers list.

The audiobook of Dress Your Family and the recording of Live At Carnegie Hall were both nominated for Grammy Awards in 2005 for Best Spoken Word Album and Best Comedy Album, respectively.

As well as publishing his own work, Sedaris has also regularly been published in print and online by titles like The New York Times, Esquire Magazine and The New Yorker

In 2010, BBC Radio 4 aired a four-part series of essays, Meet David Sedaris, before renewing it for six more series. During the show’s run, Sedaris also released his ninth book, Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls, in 2013 and took part in the 2014 documentary, Do I Sound Gay?, which examined stereotypes about the speech patterns of gay men.

From 2017 to 2020, Sedaris released three more compilations, Theft By Finding: Diaries, Calypso and A Carnival Of Snackery: Diaries.
