About

One of the most innovative and influential guitarists in rock music history

As a key contributor to their conceptual output and eventual band leader, David Gilmour’s uniquely emotive and otherworldly guitar style thrust Pink Floyd towards the stratosphere, in turn shaping the sound of one of the most influential, critically acclaimed and commercially successful acts in music history.

Though Gilmour’s entry to the music world was an unlikely one, given he was ostensibly drafted in as back-up for Pink Floyd’s initial creative force in Syd Barrett. As Barrett’s LSD experimentation had dire consequences, David Gilmour – who had busked and performed in a number of unsuccessful bands before then – plugged the gap after the release of their 1967 debut The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, having been friends with Syd and Roger Waters from their days attending Cambridgeshire High School for Boys. Barrett sadly became one of rock music’s greatest casualties, leaving Gilmour to replace him. Though, their playing styles differed.

It took several years for Pink Floyd to truly click with Gilmour in tow, releasing several uneven experimental albums until 1971’s Meddle – and its 23-minute opus ‘Echoes’ with Gilmour’s dream-like vocals and entrancing lead guitar taking the starring role – suggested the psychedelic rock outfit were capable of far more grandiose offerings. They delivered in 1973 with an album that’d become renowned the world over and the fourth-best-selling album in music history: The Dark Side Of The Moon

Pink Floyd’s album run from then onwards – Wish You Were Here in 1975, Animals in 1977, and The Wall in 1979 – reiterated their credentials as both pioneers and an art rock powerhouse, both in the studio and on the stage as they redefined live performance, reimagining concerts as immersive visual events. All the while Gilmour’s –now frequently replicated – guitar style remained the fulcrum of Floyd’s emotional pull, particularly on songs such as ‘Comfortably Numb’, which is widely considered to feature the greatest guitar solo of all time.

Roger Waters’ grip on the band’s creative direction came to a head with 1983’s The Final Cut, after which he departed leaving Gilmour to take on the role of de facto band leader. Under his stewardship, Pink Floyd released three more albums: A Momentary Lapse Of Reason in 1987; The Division Bell; and The Endless River in 2014, if you count it. He brought the band to an end in 1994, though, all four members would step on stage again in an unlikely reunion for Live 8 in 2005.

During the tail end of Waters’ time in Pink Floyd, Gilmour felt his talents were misused, so focused on recording solo material to showcase his songwriting talent. This resulted in his eponymous debut album in 1978, with his follow-up About Face coming in 1984 when his relationship with Roger was at its most strained. Aside from Gilmour’s frequent collaborations, he is also responsible for unearthing none other than Kate Bush: having been sent tapes of Bush’s material as a teenager, he arranged for EMI’s Terry Slater to listen, who eventually signed her and cultivated one of pop’s music unique players.

It was twenty two years until he concocted another solo album, which came in 2006 with On An Island and was his first solo record to reach the top ten of the UK charts, debuting at number one. Rattle That Lock followed suit in 2015, making his many fans and musical admirers wait a further nine years for his fifth studio album, Luck And Strange, which came out in 2024 and featured guest appearances from his daughter Romany as well as repurposed material written and recorded with the late former Pink Floyd architect Richard Wright.

In support of Luck And Strange, David Gilmour announced residencies in Rome’s Circo Massimo, Los Angeles Hollywood Bowl, New York City’s Madison Square Garden, and of course, a run of six concerts at London’s historic Royal Albert Hall.

  • A privilege to witness a musical genius

I have seen David Gilmour (with and without Pink Floyd) 20+ times, starting in 1988, including Live 8. David's playing and singing remains sublime. I saw the Luck and Strange tour in Brighton, Rome and London and am happy to report that the set list is excellent, the talented band are exceptional and David is on top form. Observing David smiling whilst his talented daughter, Romany, sings on this tour was heartwarming. It's a privilege to witness Gilmour playing and singing. I hope that he records and tours again soon.

  • Very, pleased on the whole

I guessing with the volume of people wanting David Gilmour tickets there was a few moments when the ticket disappeared out the basket. Once the ticket was purchased, it was nice to get emails saying it was being prepared. Arrived in plenty of time, which is good when you also have travel plans. My only, personal, panic was detaching the ticket without removing the stub by mistake and rendering it viod. Heart stopping moments in the hotel. Good to require photo ID ( as a regular gig goer the inflated ticket prices from reselling is a real concern so it felt good that I paid that price on the ticket and this is me)and it didn't hold up getting into the venue. Trillion star review for David Gilmour

  • Fantastic Event

More than just a concert! Incredible setting, fantastic atmosphere but most importantly a superb show. Dave Gilmour made the guitar sing. The light show was amazing and the rest of the band were awesome. I wished I could have turned back time and gone back to the beginning. Highlights for me included 'Fat old Sun', 'Sorrow', 'High Hopes', 'The great gig in the sky', 'scattered' and of course 'comfortably numb'. It is however unfair to single out songs when the whole concert was just phenomenal.

I am a massive Pink Floyd fan and Gilmour is my all time hero . I have never seen him live as a solo artist or with PF . I had to jump through hoops and beg for a ticket but got there in the end . What an experience …. David and his band and backing singers truly delivered . Subtle undertones with powerful delivery … A great mix of styles and songs … Romany adds a new dimension too. Awesome doesn't do it justice - buzzing
