UK pop insitution behind Karma Chamaleon and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me
Singer-songwriter Boy George joined bassist Mikey Craig and drummer Jon Moss to form a band called In Praise Of Lemmings in 1981. Within a year, they had changed their name to Culture Club, added Roy Hay on guitar and keyboards, and released three singles including the reggae-influenced Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. It went straight to No.1 on charts all over the world, quickly putting them on course to become one of the biggest bands of the ’80s.
At the end of 1982, Culture Club released their first full-length album Kissing To Be Clever, which featured those singles along with the huge hits Time (Clock Of The Heart) and I’ll Tumble 4 Ya.
Three more albums followed – 1983’s Colour By Numbers, 1984’s Waking Up With The House On Fire and 1986’s From Luxury To Heartache – before the new wave band’s dissolution in late 1986. They contained numerous chart-toppers including Karma Chameleon, Church Of The Poison Mind, Victims, The War Song and It’s A Miracle.
To date, Culture Club have sold more than 150 million records worldwide. As the first multi-racial band with an openly gay frontman known for his glamorous androgynous style, they broke stereotypes and challenged norms while establishing themselves as icons of British musical history and popular culture. Culture Club also won numerous awards including three BRITs for Best British Breakthrough Act, Best British Group and Best British Single (for Karma Chameleon), one Grammy for Best New Artist and two Ivor Novello Awards for Best Pop Song and Best Selling A-Side (both also for Karma Chameleon). Their song Time (Clock Of The Heart) was named No.107 on the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’s list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll.
Culture Club have reunited for several performances and projects since splitting up. After about 12 years, they got back together and released the 1999 album Don’t Mind If I Do before calling it quits again in 2002. They also returned in 2018 with their sixth studio album Life – containing their first original material in nearly 20 years – and went out on a huge tour to support it.
Culture Club performed a special livestream from The SSE Arena, Wembley in London called Rainbow In The Dark in December 2020.
In 2024, Culture Club announced a tour performing Kissing To Be Clever and Colour By Numbers in full and in order, with support from Tony Hadley and Heaven 17.

Great show - all three acts were fantastic.Tony Hadley -voice still as strong as ever belting out the hits for us to sing along to,Heaven 17 vibrant and energetic in their performance too. George, despite what some had said about his voice, performed for a whole 2 hours introducing the tracks from the 2 albums he performed in full. Although not all the audience knew every track, they were really well performed with fantastic stage graphics and support backing singers and his band.Absolutely loved it and the venue and ticketing arrangements were efficient and easy on the night.
Excellent concert, enjoyed every minute of it, from start to finish from support acts, Heaven 17 and Tony Hadley were great and really got the crowd going leading up to Culture Club coming on. Fantastic show put on by Boy George and Culture Club, backing singers were amazing too, powerful voices. Brilliant show and performance by all, loved every second of it. Well Done all of you 👏
The show was outstanding 👏 from the lightning ,visual effects ,George' voice on top form 👌 the memory for his mum she would be so proud 👏 the makeup was stunning ,hope it's out on dvd to relive this amazing memory again. Well dgeorge pulled out all the stops out for this show one culture club u never fail to impress ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️💛💚
To start this review I will say, the evening was great but could have been better. Heaven 17 opened the show and were fantastic, playing a good selection of hits finishing with the brilliant temptation. Then came Tony Hadley, I initially had doubts but he blew them out of the water, he belted out the tunes with great gusto, he had a fantastic voice, truly amazing, these 2 bands had the fans dancing n singing. Then culture Club came on, and the whole atmosphere changed, it went all down beat, playing the first albums was definitely for the die hard fans, but once the tunes became more popular, the atmosphere lifted and became more lively. Overall a great evening in a brilliant venue...
Travel from New York to London just to be at the 3 last shows. Knowing how professional is Boy George and Culture Club I couldn't miss to be there to embrace the phenomenal performance everything on the shows were incredible amazing from the stages choreography to the music sounds to the musicians to the audience were incredible. Boy George voice is as beautiful than ever can be, He sounds phenomenal and he looks were perfectly for the show. There is nothing to add or to be least on the show. Congratulations to Boy George and Culture Club for being excellent on this Tour. I'll be forward to seeing you again in America with this fantastic show. ♥️♥️
The best shows I've attended in the last decade! I was lucky enough to experience the Birmingham and London performances at the O2, and all three bands were absolutely phenomenal. Culture Club delivered a truly spectacular show - a proper musical celebration with stunning visuals, a fantastic band, incredible backing singers, and a brass section that brought everything to life. What stood out most was Boy George's unparalleled ability to connect with an audience of 20,000 people like no one else can. His storytelling and humorous jokes between songs had everyone laughing while adding a deeper understanding of each track. But above all, Boy George's legendary soulful singing and energetic dance moves - reminiscent of someone in their mid-30s - left everyone in awe. Thousands sang, smiled, laughed, and danced like kids again. Some even shed tears during 'Victims.' It was a powerful reminder of why Culture Club was the biggest band of the '80s. And for me, as a new fan, they are now!
This was our first trip to the new co op arena , the actual arena was amazing, very modern, lots of toilets and bar better for queuing , only downside was the seats! The chairs have arms that don't pull up so if anyone was large would struggle as very fitting. Plus the cup holders are at the back of the arms and drinks were getting knocked . But the actual concert and sound was fantastic .
The evening started with Heaven 17, we did not know their material very well with the exception of their iconic "Temptation" which they finished with and got all the crowd standing up! A good warm up act for the night. They were followed by Tony Hadley and his band. We have seen him several times now including at the Albert Hall supported by a full orchestra. He is a consummate professional and still has a terrific voice, the sound of Spandau Ballet! His vocals were the best of the night, although the male backing singer for Culture Club was also very good when he did his solo piece. The Tony Hadley band are all very talented musicians and easily equal, and most likely better than the original Spandau Ballet line up. It was an excellent 45 minutes of hit after hit, starting with the rousing "To Cut a Long Story Short" and finishing on the crowd pleasers, "True" and "Gold". "Through the Barricades" is the personal favourite Spandau song of Tony Hadley, as it is mine and was excellently performed as usual. The finale was Culture Club with an impressive stage production of videos and lighting. An excellent array of 12 musicians and backing singers comprised:- 3 guitarists including lead, bass and rythym; a drummer and percussionist, keyboard, 3 piece brass section and 3 backing singers led by George. The sound created was superb and rich with the diversity of talent on display. George is an excellent front man providing a historical perspective on his youth in both Eltham and later in Woolwich, his musical influencers and the background to his songs. I was not a serious Culture Club fan in their heyday but obviously know all their chart singles. 2 hours of songs, commentary and colourful costume changes provided for an excellent concert. Performed straight through with no encore and finishing with their iconic "Karma Chameleon" it was a fitting end to their 2024 tour. Well done to all the acts!
The show from beginning to end was electric and fantastic. Loved every moment of it .
