About
A rising voice in the British indie rock scene
With sharply observational songwriting and politically-charged lyrics, Manchester-based Chloe Slater has become the new indie-pop hero for the disillusioned Gen Z audience.
Moving from Bournemouth to Manchester for university, Chloe Slater immersed herself in the city’s vibrant open-mic scene and began posting clips on TikTok where her astute cultural references resonated. ‘24 Hours’ was released in February 2024 and marked Slater’s first major breakthrough, giving listeners a taste of her signature sprechgesang-style vocals and driving indie sound, peppered with electronic elements. Cataloging pertinent Gen Z themes from vacuous influencer culture – the track’s title a reference to Molly-Mae’s tone-deaf “We all have the same 24 hours in a day” comments – to the state of UK politics, ‘24 Hours’ was quick to clock up more than one million streams on Spotify.
Drawing comparisons to her own heroes, from Wolf Alice to Arctic Monkeys, 2024 saw Slater deservedly enjoy a rapid ascent within the contemporary music scene. Alongside her trusted collaborator, writer and producer Jack Shuter (who she met on the Mancunian gig circuit), the artist has been building up her back catalogue of catchy tracks and witty one-liners. Following on from the success of ‘24 Hours’, Slater released ‘Nothing Shines On This Island’, a commentary on social class disparity set to a dynamic soundscape of grungy guitars. These early releases culminated in the release of her debut EP in May 2024, entitled You Can’t Put a Price On Fun.
Elsewhere, Slater has been dubbed "the firebrand songwriter that's about to be everywhere" by NME, and enjoyed a stint on BBC Radio 1 when her track ‘Price On Fun’ was selected as BBC Introducing's Track of the Week. Alongside the accolades, Chloe Slater has also proved her prowess as a live act, playing a coveted slot at Glastonbury's BBC Music Introducing Stage and supporting renowned Australian artist Courtney Barnett in London and Manchester. Gearing up for the year ahead, Slater has already been announced for a slew of appearances at prominent UK festivals, including Brighton’s The Great Escape and indie-fan favourite Truck Festival, to accompany her headline tour schedule.
