The multi-faceted rapper on the rise

One of the UK’s most promising rappers is the artist known as Che Lingo. Choosing to keep his real name secret, he also goes by the “Wizard of Wandsworth”, a play on his South London roots.

Born to young parents who were struggling financially and also getting into scrapes with the law, Lingo was raised by his Jamaican grandmother from the age of two. His childhood was filled with music, as reggae, R&B, soul and rap could be heard wafting throughout their home.

Che Lingo started out performing shows in local youth clubs. He broke through in 2017 with the song Black Girl Magic, which began to establish his now signature soulful melodies and rapid-fire delivery.

The following year he released tracks like Same Energy and the EP Charisma, which saw his sound evolve as he experimented with fusing different genres. Early 2019 brought the EP Sensitive, in addition to tracks like Circles, Zuko and Big Doubts.

In February 2020, Che Lingo’s single My Block put police brutality in focus. Written about an incident in a Bedfordshire club in 2013 that left his friend with brain damage, the song went on to become the unofficial anthem for many of the Black Lives Matter protests in London. By the end of that month, Che Lingo was signed by Hollywood actor Idris Elba’s 7Wallace record label.

His debut album The Worst Generation came out in October 2020 tackling themes of discrimination, mental health, love and the importance of women in society. It also featured collaborations with Ghetts on Black Ones, Kojey Radical on Dark Days and Rachel Chinouriri on Perfect Wounds.

To support the album, Che Lingo announced The Worst Generation Tour for spring 2021.
