The greatest players on the grandest stage
Champions Tennis is the season-ending finale to the ATP Champions Tour. It’s been serving up top-class tennis action at the Royal Albert Hall since being launched at the famed London venue in 1997.
Over the years, tennis fans have been treated to seeing the greatest players compete against the stunning backdrop, with former Grand Slam champions, World No.1s and other national greats all taking to the court.
Across its first two decades, Champions Tennis featured players like Tim Henman, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Björn Borg, Boris Becker and Andy Roddick with special appearances even made by Sir Elton John, Billie Jean King and HRH The Duke Of Cambridge.
In 2018, the tournament adopted a new format. Now players work together in three teams to compete for the Champions Tennis trophy. Each day is comprised of an afternoon and evening session, with three scheduled matches per session: two competitive singles matches and one doubles match. Points are awarded for wins so the team that finishes on top is crowned champion.
In 2020, fans missed out on seeing their favourite tennis greats compete due to the coronavirus pandemic, but organisers announced Champions Tennis would return to the Royal Albert Hall again with a star-studded tennis line-up from 25 - 28 November 2021.
Goran Ivanišević, Greg Rusedski and Mark Philippoussis were also revealed as the captains for the 2021 tournament. They’ll be joined by a team line-up that includes Juan Carlos Ferrero, Tomáš Berdych, Mikhail Youzhny, Marcos Baghdatis, David Ferrer, Tommy Haas and more.
2021 Champions Tennis captains
Greg Rusedski – The former British No.1 retired from tennis in 2007 after reaching a career-high ATP ranking of World No.4. At one time Rusedski also held the record for the fastest serve recorded at 149 mph.
Mark Philippoussis – A Grand Slam contender having reached the finals of the 1998 US Open and 2003 Wimbledon tournaments, Philippoussis won two Davis Cup titles with Australia in 1999 and 2003. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 8.
Goran Ivanišević – The 2001 Wimbledon champion (and only person to win the men’s singles title as a wild card) had a career-high singles ranking of World No.2. The Croatian tennis star is currently Novak Djokovic’s coach.
