When you unearth the past life of a boisterous budding rock star and discover that they spent the most part of their education at a strictly Roman Catholic all-girls school, you can put two and two together and hazard a guess that theyâve always intended to ruffle some feathers. That desire to subvert expectations is precisely what has driven Cassy Brooking - aka Cassyette - into the heart of the contemporary rock and metal scene.
Going against the grain has seemingly been Cassyetteâs calling card since the get-go. Growing up in Chelmsford, Essex, you certainly canât accuse her of being a stereotype - the snarling singer owes her punk beautification more to Vivienne Westwood and Cradle Of Filth than any artist ever to step foot in the former home of V Festival.
After her migration up the road to London to study at university, Cassyetteâs first foray into music was from behind the decks rather than inciting mosh pits with a microphone. But it wasnât long before she returned to her first love of rock music, with an ambition to push the genre into the future.Â
Citing pop-punk, emo, and metal mainstays like Green Day, Paramore, Bring Me The Horizon, Evanescence, Slipknot, and My Chemical Romance as major influences, Cassyette has also admitted to being âextremeâ with her musical experimentation. The genre-clash star has been outspoken about her admiration for innovative bands and artists that have defined their own space such as The Prodigy and 100 Gecs, and strives to authentically forge a similar path herself.Â
Thereâs a new batch of passionate, frustrated punk rockers including Cassyette that arenât afraid of bearing all in the spotlight - YUNGBLUD, Nova Twins, Wargasm to name a few - and the Essex up-and-comer is unabashedly vulnerable. As an independent musician, the relationship with her die-hard fanbase (dubbed her âDenegerettesâ) has become vital. Cassyette has cultivated a fierce following on TikTok posting covers of her heroes as a means of connecting with fans during the pandemic. But she also uses her community to ply her trade as a ferocious live performer, where sheâd been shackled previously by anxiety and self-doubt.Â
This newfound feral swagger bleeds into each and every one of her songs. Her confessional 2021 single âDear Gothâ alludes to her fractured identity growing up in Essex, where being a goth, an emo, or any kind of misfit left you wide open to playground abuse - and often worse acts of derision. The husky, soulful tonality to her voice means she can execute stripped back versions of songs like âPetrichorâ and draw comparisons with Pink. The anthemic âSad Girl Summerâ is very much Cassyette giving the middle finger to depression and the judgements of gatekeeping metal fans.Â
After they both took a shine to her anarchic tendencies, she was handpicked to support Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes on tour and her heroes My Chemical Romance at their enormous Milton Keynes stadium shows in 2022 which led to spots at showcase festival The Great Escape, Reading and Leeds, and Slam Dunk Festival, ahead of her own âSad Girl Summerâ UK tour in September that year.
