Bursting with passion and unforgettable melodies

Few operas are more dramatic than French composer Georges Bizet’s Carmen. Performed in four acts, it’s filled with sensuality, jealousy and violence.

The opera debuted in the late 19th century, inspired by a Prosper Mérimée novella of the same name written in 1845. The story follows the dangerous passions of Carmen, an enigmatic and seductive cigarette factory worker, and army officer Don José. When he’s called to the factory after she attacks another woman with a knife, he becomes obsessed with her. Although he lets Carmen escape, will he ever be able to possess her – especially when the bullfighter Escamillo captures her attention?

From Carmen’s enticing Habanera that begins with the line “Love is a rebellious bird that none can tame” to The Toreador’s Song and Don José’s lyrical Flower Song, this opera is packed with unforgettable arias.

The Observer described a past performance of Ellen Kent’s production of Carmen as “impassioned and sultry”, while The Independent raved it was “hot-blooded, a joy”.

In early 2021, Senbla announced the presentation of Opera International’s award-winning Ellen Kent production of Carmen across numerous UK cities from January through May 2022. In addition to a highly lauded chorus, international soloists and full orchestra, the dazzling show will feature a set that evokes the magnificent architecture of Seville and its main square with Roman and Moorish influences.
