Beguiling voice(s), backed with expert instrumentals
by Codezulu on 29/09/2024Firstly, I am astonished that I am the first reviewer of Camera Obscura on this site, surely not! I am emotionally attached to this band. Back in 2004/5 I was serving with the RN in Oman (Middle East) and was going through a marriage break up (I know, you don't need to know that), I was already into Indie music, without forgetting my Beatles, et al, heritage, but decent record stores were not prevalent in Muscat. However, there was a music store in my locality, which sold culturally inoffensive CDs. I homed in on the Indie compilation CDs. One of these had in its track list Camera Obscura's " Eighties Fan". This was so gorgeous to me that I bought all of their albums, and have loved every single track of every album since. Of course, much of this is to do with the utterly gorgeous voice of Tracyanne, and let's not underestimate the effect that has on me, but this truly is a 'greater that the sum of the parts' ensemble. Thank you Camera Obscura, you helped getting me through a bad time. If I could catch you in a live performance, I would be delighted. For anyone who loves Canera Obscura, have a listen to New Zealand band Minisnap - different, but delightful for similar reasons.
