About
Body&Soul will once again put its contemporary twist on the Summer Solstice celebration by transforming the 15th Century Walled Gardens, forests, lakes and meadows of Ballinlough Estate, Co Westmeath into a playground of sumptuous surprises for its discerning music fans next June 17-19.
A five-tiered ticketing system and instalment payment plan will be in place again this year with a limited number of weekend tickets sold in each price tier. Once Tier 1 tickets sell out, Tier 2 tickets will become available and so on. Early booking is encouraged to ensure not missing out on what is likely to be one of the musical highlights of the year.
Body&Soul Festival pulls the first of a string of surprises from its sleeve with the announcement of deliciously diverse acts set to serenade this year’s solstice gathering.
The seventh edition puts a renewed focus on the peripheral, the parties, the finer details and the arts. An immersive summit of music, discovery, spoken word, holistic escapes, debate, gastronomic indulgences, blissful treatments and theatrical delights, Body&Soul arouses the senses and makes the mundane magnificent. A weekend of refined and grown-up treats, artistic flourishes and after-dark divilment nourished by the forests, lakeside splendour, natural amphitheatres and green pastures of Ballinlough Castle.
This first music announcement spotlights exciting new acts and respected favourites, programmed to indulge the most discerning musical aficionados. Body&Soul is proud to welcome Santigold, an intoxicating, left-of-mainstream artist who perfectly blends candy-coated basslines, technicolor electronic pop, brooding R&B and noisy arena-rock. Guided equally by tradition and the shiny future, her joyfully danceable, globally influenced and shape-shifting set will explode onto the Body&Soul Main Stage.
An uncontested figure in the world of electronic music for the past two decades, and a creator of intelligent, sensual and original deep house, St Germain, aka Parisian producer Ludovic Navarre, arrives in Ireland 15 years after his multi-platinum album Tourist. His music is a complex blend, reflecting his love of the blues and music of all kinds, with hypnotic loops and harmoniously intertwined vocal samples. Drawing his inspiration from classical, jazz, soul and even Brazilian popular music Floating Points (Live), delivers an eclectic mix of tracks; at times delicate, alternating to intense euphoric release, built on layers of driving basslines, untamed drums and soaring compositions. What else would you expect from a producer who dabbles in neuroscience?!
Maverick explorers, US alt-rock legends Mercury Rev will make their Body&Soul debut, showcasing their wondrous and voluminous kaleidoscope of calm, shivery comedowns entwined with ecstatic highs. Their new album The Light In You, contains arguably some of the best tracks of this notable band. BadBadNotGood, the Canadian trio bring a jazz inspired hip-hop sound, full of loungy reverb-drenched guitars, soundtrack-ready choruses and chaotic bass and drum to our rolling green fields. Returning from a five year hiatus are Wolf Parade who will perform favourites from their catalogue as well as some of their new tunes. Poignant and melancholy, Sun Kil Moon’s luminous acoustic balladry is harnessed by a harrowingly intimate lyricism in what is sure to be a mesmerising set. Canadian duo Junior Boys will join us with their reinvented and reinvigorated sound, fresh after their just-released fifth album Big Black Coat.
Psychedelic electro soul with elements of West African highlife, disco and post punk join the party in the form of Ibibio Sound Machine. Bringing an elegant, energetic fusion style of Korean music is the thrilling and unexpected Jambinai. West of Ireland trio, Rusangano Family, made up of God Knows, MuRli and mynameisjOhn will deliver a hefty dose of honest, double-edged lyricism over skewed soul samples, 808 beats and sliced-up breaks. We can’t wait to have them.
A diverse Midnight Circus lineup reflects Body&Soul’s discerning taste, presenting a cutting edge mix of European acts alongside a strong Irish presence, oscillating between the distinct and the distinctly different. From the chaotic and rumbling jungle sounds of Mbongwana Star to the universal inclusiveness of Slow Magic, showcasing their unique cosmic electronica, it’s a dream playlist for refined musical tastes. The frantic thrash-rap of Ho99o9 is a perfect example: their theatrical aggro-rap speaks to fans of hard-core, thrash and speed metal, while their live shows are the ultimate neo-punk mosh pit. A progressive, refreshing addition to the dance music scene, Cassy is full of feminine power and a musical flow that delivers diverse techno with soul, elegance and a touch of mystery.
2014 Polaris Music Prize Winner Tanya Tagaq is fearsome, strident and elemental and we expect her visceral, physical performance to lift the roof of our tented auditorium. Be sure to catch NAH, purveyor of anxiety laden beats and sound collages of DIY punk and avant jazz and the mysterious Ninos Du Brasil, who consistently surprise with their bold and unlikely sounds of batucada, samba and electronica. Berlin trio FJAAK brings the Berlin underground party straight to Ballinlough.
Body&Soul has once again added the most exciting Irish acts of the minute to its bill. Bitch Falcon have quickly established a reputation as one of Dublin's most ferocious live acts and one of Ireland's leading musical prospects, while Forrests manage time and again to take leaps into the digital unknown, bringing listeners on a memorably galactic ride. The groove driven harmonies of TooFools and the icy precision of EMBRZ complement the dark, earthy quality of ELM, the R&B infused poignancy of Talos and the bewitching, otherworldly Saint Sister.
A sell-out event since its inception, Body&Soul delivers a truly unparalleled experience, where like-minded people converge for three days and nights under a canopy of intrigue and adventure, where the finer details matter and where every aspect is considered. Follow the lights deep into Body&Soul this summer solstice...fortune favours the bold.
