About

English-American songwriter best known for his decades of work with Elton John

In 1967, Bernie Taupin answered an advert in the paper from a record company seeking songwriters. He didn’t pass the audition. Neither did a hopeful young musician who confessed to the man behind the desk that he could not write lyrics. The man gave the musician an envelope from a pile of lyrical submissions, containing poems that the musician read on his tube ride home – and that was how Bernie Taupin’s work first came into the orbit of Elton John.

Over the next six decades, the duo would work together on over thirty albums. Taupin has written the lyrics for many of John’s biggest hits, including but not limited to ‘Rocket Man’, ‘Tiny Dancer’, ‘Bennie and the Jets’, ‘Crocodile Rock’ and ‘Candle In The Wind.’ Taupin has also written for many other artists, including Starship, Heart and Alice Cooper. In 2006, he won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song after composing the lyrics to ‘A Love That Will Never Grow Old’ from Brokeback Mountain.

Taupin’s solo work is extensive and sees him work in a number of disciplines, including spoken word, poetry, memoir and visual art. He has released three solo albums and two further records with his band Farm Dogs. In 2023, Taupin announced that his new autobiography, Scattershot, would be released in September of that year, containing details about his professional relationship with John that Taupin had previously kept close to his chest as well as many stories about his wider artistic endeavors.
