Swedish metal band blending the industrial grind of Rammstein with the melodic death metal of Amon Amarth and Alice Cooper-esque theatrics

Death metal band Avatar were formed in 2001 by Lost Souls members John Alfredsson and Jonas Jarlsby. Rounded out by singer Johannes Eckerström, Henrik Sandelin and Simon Andersson, the band recorded a demo and set about gigging extensively around their native Sweden. Following their 2004 EP 4 Reasons To Die, they started work on their debut album, Thoughts Of No Tomorrow, signing with Gain Records in the process.

Tours with big name metal acts Stone Sour and Obituary bookended the release of their second album Schlacht, while their self-titled third album paved the way for the band to take their Avatar live shows – complete with theatrically gothic costumes – to the US.

Black Waltz, released in 2012, became the band’s first album to enter the Top 30 in Sweden, and Avatar followed it with their first US charts entry (2014’s Hail The Apocalypse) and 2016’s owl-centric apocalyptic concept album Feathers And Flesh. Two years later, they returned with Avatar Country, another concept album where every song title contained the word “king” and the band offered their own take on the Swedish royal anthem.

In 2020, Avatar delivered their eighth studio album, Hunter Gatherer, placing an even greater emphasis on melody alongside their trademark, epic mix of death, prog and black metal.

In 2021, Avatar announced a January 2022 UK tour, with dates in Manchester, Bristol, London and Southampton.
