About

Folk rock project of US singer-songwriter Sam Beam

The brainchild of the hirsute, soft-voiced Sam Beam, Iron & Wine spearheaded the indie folk revolution of the early 00s, thanks to a string of critically acclaimed albums, and a Postal Service cover that set the blogosphere alight.

Beam's demos were doing the rounds in the early 00s when one caught the ear of Seattle's seminal Sub Pop label. Drawn from those early bare-boned recordings, Iron & Wine's 2002 debut album, The Creek Drank The Cradle, was an instant success. Determined not to repeat himself, Beam returned in 2004 with the more polished Our Endless Numbered Days, produced by Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Josh Ritter).

This progression continued across two EPs in 2005: the surprisingly electric Woman King, and a collaboration with Calexico on In The Reins. Both expanded Iron & Wine's palette without sacrificing any of the hushed intimacy that defined Beam's songs and delivery. Iron & Wine incorporated traces of dub and blues into a third critically acclaimed album, 2007's The Shepherd's Dog, whose single 'Flightless Bird, American Mouth' was featured in both the Twilight and Breaking Dawn - Part 1 soundtracks. Two years later, Iron & Wine released the rarities collection Around The Well, which included Beam's adored acoustic cover of 'Such Great Heights',

As indie folk’s moment in the sun passed, Iron & Wine continued to explore new avenues, pushing further away from the project's gentle early sound towards more ambitious places on 2011’s Kiss Each Other Clean and 2013’s Ghost On Ghost. Iron & Wine also teamed up with Band Of Horses’ Ben Bridwell for the rock/folk country covers album, Sing Into My Mouth, in 2015. That same year, he launched his Archive series, uncovering rarities from throughout his career as Iron & Wine.

For his sixth album, Beast Epic (2017), Sam Beam returned to his signature acoustic folk, before reuniting with Calexico for 2019’s Years To Burn. Iron & Wine stayed incredibly active over the following years, with anniversary reissues, archive releases, EPs and a documentary. This flurry preceded 2024’s Light Verse, Beam’s first full studio album in six years.
