The irrefutable ‘Godfather Of Punk’

One of the most illuminating and influential figures in rock music history, Iggy Pop’s endurance is a testament to the trailblazer’s mercurial talent and primitive on-stage antics throughout his storied life and career.

The archetypal rock wildman, generations of young punk rockers have modelled themselves on Iggy Pop’s stage presence and never-say-die approach to music ever since he propelled The Stooges toward notoriety during their initial lifespan in the late 60s and early 70s.

Born on 21 April 1947 in Muskegon, Michigan, a young Jim Osterberg’s intellect and ambition quickly outgrew the Ann Arbor trailer park where he was raised, though he soon found himself back at home after a short stint at the University of Michigan. Having already played drums in a handful of bands like The Iguanas (where he’d establish his nickname ‘Iggy’) and the Prime Movers, Osterberg took centre stage when he recruited former school friends Ron and Dave Ashteon, and Dave Alexander to form The Stooges. Inspired by the Dionysian persona of The Doors’ frontman Jim Morrison, Osterberg took it a step further when he embodied his moniker Iggy Pop on stage each night, leaving audiences transfixed amid the blood smearing, proto-punk rock frenzy and stage-diving, which the singer is credited with pioneering.

With the advent of punk in the UK, Pop became a pop cultural figurehead due to The Stooges’ influence on the burgeoning punk rock movement, which helped establish his newfound footing as a solo musician. Later cutting ties with Bowie, Pop pursued a more experimental sound as new wave kicked off, though his issues with addiction would once again take hold leaving Iggy virtually penniless. David Bowie came to his rescue again, covering ‘China Girl’ (which featured on The Idiot) in what became a huge hit single, as well as producing his 1986 album, Blah Blah Blah

But with the death of brothers and bandmates Ron and Scott Asheton, The Stooges quietly broke up, with Iggy Pop changing tack. From here onwards, the war-torn punk rock idol bedded into the role of elder statesman crooner for his new material, assembling an enviable band of talent for his Grammy Award-nominated 2016 album, Post Pop Depression. In somewhat of a surprise, Iggy revealed he’d written his new album with Queens of the Stone Age rocker Josh Homme, who brought his own bandmates Dean Fertita and Troy Van Leeuwen, as well as Arctic Monkeys’ drummer Matt Helders along for the subsequent worldwide tour.

Rejuvenated and finally reaping the financial rewards from his long career in music, Iggy went on to release further albums Free in 2019 and EVERY LOSER in 2023, only strengthening his legacy as punk rock’s original wildchild.

In May 2025, Iggy Pop heads to London for an extra special show at London’s historic Alexandra Palace.
