A melodic visionary redefining hip-hop
The American rapper, singer and songwriter Don Toliver has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame thanks to his genre-bending sound and distinctive auto-tuned vocals, evident on viral TikTok hits like ‘No Idea’ and ‘After Party’.
Growing up in Houston, Texas, Don Toliver found himself influenced by the city’s rich hip-hop culture, having incubated heroes like UGK and Travis Scott. Featuring the hit ’Diamonds’, his mixtape Donny Womack (2018) is credited as the rapper’s breakout effort. The mixtape was fortuitously released a day prior to Travis Scott’s album Astroworld, on which Toliver lent his vocals for fan-favourite track ‘Can’t Say’. Within a week, Don Toliver was signed with Scott’s record label, Cactus Jack Records, and a few years later, the Texan rapper had amassed billions of streams and several triple-platinum tracks.
Like many rappers, Don Toliver has monopolised on collaborations with other artists to broaden his platform and accelerate his career. Making the most of the early momentum, Cactus Jack Records facilitated his turn on JACKBOYS (2019), an album from the collective of rappers signed to Scott’s imprint, where he appeared on ‘Had Enough’ alongside Quavo and Offset. Upon its release, JACKBOYS debuted atop the US Billboard 200, making it the first No.1 album of the 2020s. Affirming his reputation for versatility, later collaborations saw Don Toliver feature on Kanye West’s ‘Moon’, Metro Boomin’s ‘Too Many Nights’, SZA’s ‘Used’, and many more. Elsewhere, Toliver’s catchy hook on Internet Money’s laid-back hit ‘Lemonade’ (also featuring Gunna and NAV) became a viral sensation and mainstream hit, with the honorary group being invited to perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Away from the features and collaborations, Don Toliver has been diligently perfecting a genre-bending lane of his own. With influences ranging from hip hop to smoked-out R&B, his use of auto-tuned vocals, spacey production and psychedelic melodies all serve to create Toliver’s dreamy and immersive sound. Showcasing Toliver’s evolving artistry and unstoppable commercial growth, his latest album Hardstone Psycho (2024) is no exception. Where Life of a DON (2021) used trap beats and R&B influences to delve into his experiences with fame, and Love Sick (2023) explored themes of love and relationships to a more melodic backdrop, Hardstone Psycho marks a stylistic shift. Infusing experimental rock elements and a longstanding fascination with motorcycle culture into Toliver’s signature sound, the album debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200.
In June 2025 Toliver returns to the UK with Manchester and London dates as part of the Psycho Tour.
