Tones and I
Self-taught Aussie music-making sensation
Tones And I is the stage name of Toni Watson, the pop artist behind 2019’s two-billion-plus streamed hit Dance Monkey.
Hailing from Australia’s Mornington Peninsula, she had no formal vocal training but taught herself to sing. Tones And I launched her music career in 2018 when she quit her retail job and moved to Byron Bay to begin busking. She lived out of her van for a year performing as a solo act and uploading cover videos on her YouTube channel.
Inspired by musicians like Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Tones And I also began combining piano melodies with electronic beats. In early 2019 she posted her debut single Johnny Run Away and it received play on some of Australia’s alternative radio stations.
Tones And I had written the song Dance Monkey for her friends and fellow backpackers while staying at a hostel. When she released it in May 2019, it became a supersized success. Not only did Dance Monkey spend 24 weeks at No.1 on the ARIA singles chart and 11 weeks at No.1 on the UK singles chart, but it also claimed the top spot for multiple weeks in 28 other countries. Her debut EP The Kids Are Coming came out later that summer and put her catchy songwriting on full display.
Tones And I went on to win the Song Of The Year and Breakthrough Songwriter titles at the 2020 Australian Performing Right Association Music Awards and unveiled the standalone tracks Bad Child, Can't Be Happy All The Time and UR So F**king Cool.
