About

Spanish singer-songwriter praised for her groundbreaking contributions to pop.

Before Rosalía was playing for crowds of 60,000, she was a music student who sang at weddings in her spare time, sometimes just for a free dinner. Now with eight Latin Grammy Awards under her belt, it’s safe to assume her fee would be a little higher. After falling in love with Spanish folk music at an early age, she was determined to make a career for herself in the performing arts, particularly within flamenco music.

Her first professional outing came in 2012 when she joined flamenco music group Kejaleo as their vocalist, releasing an album with the group in 2013. Between 2013 and 2015 she worked on a number of successful collaborations, in an era of her career that would take her from shows in Singapore to the International Music Festival of Cadaqués. Her biggest break came in 2016, however, when Rosalía invited producer Raül Refree to see her perform in Barcelona. The two began to work on music together, creating two albums. One of these albums became Rosalía’s debut, Los Ángeles. The album was released to praise from critics, earning Rosalía a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.

Rosalía’s second album came about very differently. Still studying at the Catalonia College of Music, she embarked on the creation of the album as her baccalaureate project. El Mal Querer was to tell the story of the Romance of Flamenca, with each song telling a chapter of the anonymous story. Rosalía invested a lot of her own money into the record and almost went bankrupt due to the cost. The gamble paid off, however – the album’s lead single ‘Malamente’ received both critical and celebrity attention and won two Latin Grammys. Follow-up singles ‘Pienso en tu Mirá’ and ‘Di Mi Nombre’ also saw much success, with ‘Di Mi Nombre’ reaching No.1 in Spain.

El Mal Querer was released in late 2018 to universal acclaim, making Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list among many other accolades. It won Album of the Year at the Latin Grammys and Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album at the Grammys. Rosalía also embarked on her first world tour in celebration of the album. Whilst touring, she released several stand alone singles, picking up three more Latin Grammy awards as she went. In 2019, Rosalía won the Rising Star award at Billboard’s Women in Music.

In 2021 Rosalía released ‘La Fama’, the lead single from her third album and a collaboration with The Weeknd. Following further singles ‘Saoko’ and ‘Chicken Teriyaki’, Motomami was released in 2022, again to great critical acclaim. Rolling Stone in Spain stated that the album ‘redefined mainstream’ with its experimental folk-meets-reggaeton sound.
