About

American band The Civil Wars comprises singer-songwriters John Paul White and Joy Williams. The duo met at a songwriting camp in Nashville in 2008 and quickly pooled their talents to create their distinctive indie folk/country sound. Their first record was a free download EP entitled Live At Eddie's Attic, released in 2009, followed by the EP Poison & Wine in November of the same year. The title track caught the public's imagination and the pair began work on a full-length album.

Debut album, Barton Hollow, was released in February 2011, topping the iTunes chart and reaching No. 12 on the Billboard 200 chart and the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Folk Album chart. Haunting tracks such as 20 Years, C'est La Mort and the title track contributed to the album's success and brought wide critical acclaim. In addition to receiving certified gold status, the record won two Grammys, for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Best Folk Album in 2012. After a brief hiatus, Joy and John Paul returned to the studio to work on another album. Containing tracks The One That Got Away, From This Valley and Dust To Dust, the self-titled record debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts on its November 2013 release.

The Civil Wars have played numerous gigs all over the United States as well as performing at the prestigious Sundance Festival. In addition, they were part of an epic line-up at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2012, playing alongside acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Florence and the Machine, Rufus Wainwright and The Black Keys. 2012 also saw the band reach a whole host of new fans after their successful tour of the UK and Ireland.

The Civil Wars' moving songs have made them a popular choice for film and TV producers. Poison & Wine has featured in hit shows such as Grey's Anatomy and The Vampire Diaries, whilst Dust To Dust was chosen to accompany a pivotal scene in the 2013 remake of the classic horror film Carrie. The band collaborated with T Bone Burnett to create the soundtrack for a documentary, A Place At The Table, and worked with Taylor Swift on the song, Safe and Sound, for the second in the Hunger Games film trilogy. Joy Williams also features as a guest vocalist on Misery Chain, a Chris Cornell track featured on the soundtrack of award-winning film 12 Years A Slave. The band's distinctive sound and evocative lyrics give their music a timeless quality with enormous appeal.
