The National Television Awards, aka NTAs, is the UK’s top TV awards event celebrating the most loved stars and shows of the small screen. The public chooses the winners in a nationwide poll with votes placed by mail, telephone or online. Each year the results are unveiled during a spectacular ceremony full of live music and guest performances that’s also broadcast on ITV.
The inaugural National Television Awards took place in 1995 at Wembley Conference Centre. Eamonn Holmes was the presenter while the hugely popular series Soldier Soldier claimed the Drama prize and Julie Goodyear was the Special Recognition winner.
From 1996 to 2008, the NTAs were held at London’s Royal Albert Hall with Trevor McDonald as the host. In 2009, the timing was changed from October to January, so there ended up being no event that year. In 2010, the ceremony moved to The O2 with Dermot O’Leary presenting through 2019, followed by David Walliams in 2020.
Over the years, Special Recognition winners have included everyone from Jeremy Clarkson and Simon Cowell to Jamie Oliver, Sir David Attenborough, Graham Norton, Joanna Lumley and many more.
Sam Aston of Coronation St. became the youngest NTA winner ever when he was named Best Newcomer at the age of 11 in 2004. Other highlights have included Blue Planet II receiving the Impact award in 2018, with the audience giving it the longest-standing ovation to date – which lasted six minutes and 15 seconds.

Amazing show brill night ! Celebrities all over .. great night !
We had a fantastic evening. It was Sandra's 4th Awards and James's first time attending. Meeting the stars on the red carpet was our favourite bit! It was an experience we will never forget and we will certainly be back!!
It was a good night but I thought it was rushed a bit at the end, and thought there was a couple of categories missing ie. Best New Comer, Best Villain, Best Actress and Best Actor
2nd time there great experience lifetime experience meeting celebs great vibes great music
